What is it?
Alliteration, assonance, and consonance are all poetic
sound devices. In a poem, they use repetition to create
sounds and set the mood. These sounds can be soothing if
the poet wants the reader to be relaxed, abrasive if the poet
wants the reader to be tense, or in any other mood.

OVERVIEW REVIEW PHOTO
The repetition of the same consonant sounds
in a line of text is known as consonance.
These similar sounds can appear anywhere
in the word, but they are most commonly
found at the word's end or middle, or at the
end of the stressed syllable.

similar vowel sounds to
be noticeable.

• The repetition of an initial consonant sound in words
that are close to each other is known as alliteration.
• Alliteration is also known as "initial rhyme" because it
is the inverse of rhyme—rather than repeating a
sound at the end of two or more words, alliteration
repeats a sound at the beginning of two or more
words.
