A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.
Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.

26. ∗ Well-insulated Walls & Attic
∗ Effective insulation slows the rate that heat flows out of the
house in winter or into the house in summer, so less energy is
required to heat or cool the house
∗ Upgrade or Replace Windows
∗ Weather strip & add storm windows
- Upgrade single pane & pay the slight premium for Energy Star
∗ Can save 7-24% in heating/cooling costs

27. ∗ Plant Shade Trees & Shrubs
∗ Deciduous trees and tall shrubs planted on home’s west side
∗ Block heat gain in summer and allow heat gain in winter
∗ Most effective for older homes without insulation or window
upgrades
∗ Replace Furnace
∗ Built before 1992 & has standing pilot, wastes ~35% of the fuel it
uses, and it is probably near the end of its service life.
∗ ACEEE recommends early replacement w/ condensing furnace w/
annual efficiency of at least 90 percent meaning it wastes no
more than 10% of the fuel used & can save ~27% on heating.

28. ∗ Improve Hot Water System
∗ Adjust to the warm setting (120°F).
∗ Insulate your hot water lines so they don’t cool off as quickly
between uses.
∗ Use low-flow fixtures for showers and baths.
∗ “On Demand” hot water circulating loops are much more
efficient than continuous recirculating loops that waste
energy and electricity.

29. ∗ Replace Lightbulbs w/ CFLs or LEDs
∗ CFLs can save 75% of the electricity used by incandescents.
∗ A CFL costs $2-$3 but lasts 10,000 hours = ~$22 in electricity = ~$25
total cost.
∗ A 100-watt incandescent bulb costs $0.50 but lasts 1,000 hours so
you need 10 of them ($5 to buy) to last 10,000 hours = ~$80 in
electricity = ~$85 total cost
∗ First target 60- to 100-watt bulbs used several hours a day
∗ If replacing Refrigerator…
∗ Side by side units use 20-25% more energy than top/bottom units.
∗ Select Energy Star rated & use the recommended settings

∗ Evaluate home & make recommendations
∗ Energy rater can also provide independent verification
of contractors’ work quality.
∗ Look for raters who are RESNET Accredited.
∗ In some regions, there are Home Performance with
Energy Star programs, too. Most of these programs
include low-cost home assessment and strong quality
assurance practices and/or inspections
