5. Advantages of traditional materials are:
low environmental impact, low cost, and good reaction to climate; handled by
local skilled labour, who are familiar with both the production and repair of
traditional constructions. Traditional building materials are mostly made from
naturally available materials.
Classification of materials with respect
to time: ( traditional – modern )
TRADITIONAL BUILDING MATERIALS
6. Characterized by a high environmental impact, especially as far
as the embodied energy is concerned.
Glass fibre insulation
the lowest embodied energy & environmental impact.
MODERN BUILDING MATERIALS
7. Properties of Eco-Friendly Building
Materials and Techniques.
ECO-FRIENDLY BUILDING MATERIALS
Eco-friendly materials are characterized by low embodied energy
and low related emissions; they are durable and convenient for
recycling and reuse.
8. LIFE CYCLE ASSESSMENT of MATERIALS (LCA)
a technique for assessing environmental impacts associated with all
the stages of a product’s life (i.e., from raw material extraction
through processing, manufacture, distribution, use, repair and
maintenance, to disposal or recycling of the materials).
12. Managing of building materials after disposal
is the process of converting waste materials into reusable objects
to prevent waste and reduce consumption of fresh materials.
18. Down cycling
Some objects can be recycled over and over again into the same
product without any loss of integrity. However, other objects cannot be
made into the same product or can only be made into the same
product a limited number of times. When the object cannot be remade
into the same product, it is said to be downcycled.
Glass and metal are products that can be recycled a near infinite
amount of times. But paper and plastic are eventually downcycled.
Paper is made of fibers, as it is recycled, the fibers get shortened
meaning that it can only be turned into thinner and thinner pieces of
paper (think printer paper to tissue paper). Eventually it cannot be
recycled anymore. Similarly plastic can usually only be downcycled.
An example is that the yogurt container is turned into plastic lumber.

20. Precycling is the process of thinking things through
before buying something. Before buying a product
ask yourself, “When I am finished with this product
what will happen?” Will it go off to a landfill, am I
going to recycle it, will I be able to reuse it somehow
or am I going to donate it to someone? Knowing the
answer to these questions before buying a product is
a great step in a great direction. Precycling is a very
good way to reduce the buildup of waste, items to
landfills and even can save you money.
21. Below are ways to think ahead and Precycle:
•buy items in bulk and avoid individually wrapped items
•avoid non-compostable and non-recyclable packaging
•buy loose fruits and vegetables instead of packaged
•buy concentrates because they last longer and then recycle the container
•make double sided copies when you have to print
•use a reusable coffee and travel mugs
•use washable plates and utensils instead of disposable
•bring your own canvas or reusable bags with you to the store; don’t use the
store’s bags
•use cloth napkins instead of paper
•use rechargeable batteries
•donate used toys, clothing and even appliances to charities and non-profit
organizations
22. Below are ways to think ahead and Precycle:
•compact fluorescent bulbs are more energy efficient and they also last longer
than regular incandescent bulbs
•save used brown paper bags, twist ties, plastic food bags, foam packing chips,
boxes, gift wrap, holiday cards for reuse
•borrow or rent items you only use occasionally or consider buying and sharing
that equipment with friends or family
Get together with your family and think of ways to precycle. You may find
that you eventually will be buying less often. You can reduce your waste
while saving money. Think ahead and Precycle!
