The 2020 Summer Olympics will be held from July 24th to August 9th, 2020 in Tokyo, Japan. Tokyo was selected as the host city in a vote by the International Olympic Committee on September 7th, 2013, defeating Istanbul. New and upgraded venues around Tokyo will host 28 of the 33 competition events within 5 miles of the Olympic Village, including a $1 billion reconstruction of the National Olympic Stadium. The mascot for the 2020 Games is Doraemon, an animated robotic cat. The IOC selected 25 core sports for 2020, adding golf and rugby sevens while controversially removing wrestling from the Olympic program.
