UNDERSTAND THE
REQUIREMENTS FOR A
SPECIFIC MEDIA
PRODUCTION
EVE BROOKES
DIGITAL MOVING IMAGE PRODUCTION (FILM
AND TELEVISION)
THE FUNDING ASPECT CAN COME FROM UK GOVERNMENT
FUNDING WHICH CAN PUT IN MILLIONS INTO BRISTISH FILMS
EACH YEAR. ANOTHER WAY OF FUNDING IS CALLED THE
STUDIO MODEL WHICH IS WHERE YOU CAN GET 3-5 FILMS
TOGETHER WHICH HAVE A SIMILAR GENRE, THEN YOU CAN
APPROACH INVESTORS AND SEE IF THEY ARE INTERESTED IN
YOUR FILM. ALSO YOU COULD APPROACH A PRIVATE INVESTOR
WHO MIGHT BE INTERESTED IN A SHARE OF YOUR PROFITS AT
THE END. THE REQUIREMENTS OF FINANCE COULD INCLUDE
LETTING YOUR INVESTORS HAVE A SAY IN THE PRODUCTION IN
YOUR FILM LIKE THE STORYLINE OR THE ACTORS CHOSEN.
THEY COULD ALSO WANT YOU TO HAVE WELL THOUGHT OUT
PLANS FOR YOUR FILM BEFORE IT GOES AHEAD
The requirements of finance could include letting your
investors have a say in the production in your film like the
storyline or the actors chosen. They could also want you to
have well thought out plans for your film before it goes ahead
DIGITAL MOVING IMAGE PRODUCTION (FILM
AND TELEVISION)
Creating a film is extremely hard and takes a lot of time and
preparation. Films usually take up to 45-60 days of filming/production
then 6 months or a year for pre-production planning, films running
times are usually around 110 minutes. Film locations need to be
considered wisely as there needs to be the desired climate in order
for the weather conditions to be correct for the film. The actors of the
film will need to have certain location for them to get their make-up
and costumes done, also a location for the camera equipment needs
to be found as well. Facilities that will be needed are sets, filming
locations. Personnel will be a producer, director, screenwriter,
production designer, costume designer, editor, actors,
cinematographer and a music supervisor. There is specific
equipment needed for making a film which are a video camera,
tripod, lighting and different types of microphones.
DIGITAL MOVING IMAGE PRODUCTION (FILM
AND TELEVISION)
Clearances are all about copyright, if you would like to include copyright material in your film
or TV programme, you must have a right to do so. Your either need a form of an outright
transfer or a licence of copyright from the owner of these rights. Organising a rights
clearance in order to not get in trouble for copyright. The Mechanical-Copyright Protection
Society makes agreements with people who wish to record an distribute product containing
copyright musical works and collects licence fees for these. Health and Safety is taken
extremely serious, the line of responsibility runs from the Producer to the Production
Manager and the 1st Assistant Director and the finally all of the crew members that have a
duty of care which is recognised by the law. Risk assessments need to be taken by
identifying all the hazard, evaluate the risks then seek a solution to control the risk.
Safeguarding needs to be put into place and how many hours children/adults can work
needs to be followed by the law. There are a few regulations that need to be followed when
in production of film and TV production to ensure that the UK remains film-friendly. There are
a few Unions that practice the regulations, The UK unions provide guidance and support pay
rates and working practices, Equity is a UK trade union for professional performers and
creative practitioners, BECTU is the UK’s media and entertainment trade union and The
Writers Guild of Great Britain (WGGB) which is the trade representing professional writers in
TV, film, theatre, radio, books, poetry, animation and video games. The regulations involve
working with children, working with animals, using weapons, using explosives and smoking
laws. All regulations must be followed otherwise you are breaking the law.
Ofcom is the regulator for the communications services that are used and relied on each
day. They make sure that people get the best from services provided and also prevent
people getting scammed.
You will need to get your film age rating approved by BBFC in order for the age rating to be
approved professionally.
DIGITAL PUBLISHING (NEWSPAPER,
MAGAZINES)
Most newspapers are their own businesses and they pay their
expenses which involves subscription revenue, newsstand
sales and advertising revenue . Other companies will pay the
newspaper company to advertises their brand inside the
newspaper. Some newspaper companies are run by the
government or at least government-funded. There don’t need
to relay on advertising revenue and profit is less critical to
their survival. Financing needs to be budgeted in order for all
the equipment to be funded e.g. computer, printers, printing
ink e.t.c . Staff need to be paid on time and correctly, transport
for distributing the newspapers/magazines needs to be funded
for in order for stock to get out on shelves.
DIGITAL PUBLISHING (NEWSPAPER,
MAGAZINES)
When publishing a Newspaper or Magazine timing of
distributuion extremely matters, you need to be aware of what is
going on at all times in all departments, as you will need to know
what is happening now and what is happening next all the time in
order for the process to be able to run as smoothly and quickly as
possible. The employees need to be able to meet time deadlines
in order for the newspaper/magazine to get out on the shelves
daily. Lots of different equipment will need to used when in the
publishing productions such as a copier, desks, shelves, storage
space, printer paper and printer toner. A location must be chosen
for in which to set up the business where computers can be
installed among other basic business items. There are many
different departments needed in order to publish a
newspaper/magazine which are the Editorial Department,
Advertising Department, Circulation Department, Printing
Department, Administrative Department, Accounting Department
and Stores Department. All of these departments are as
important as each other as if one went down they would all go
out and struggle without each other.
DIGITAL PUBLISHING (NEWSPAPER,
MAGAZINES)
Newspapers and Magazines need to follow regulations otherwise it could be seen
as bias and not true. Newspaper editors have to follow the rules of the Editor’s
Code of Practice. Copyright is a legal right that resides with the person who has
created the work which means no one else is allowed to use or reproduce someone
else's work in any way either permission. Health and Safety needs to be followed
by everyone in the company. Risk assessments need to be taken by identifying all
the hazard, evaluate the risks then seek a solution to control the risk. The
NewsGuild-CWA is a labour union which improves wages and working conditions.
You will also have to follow the GPDR which insures that the users data is
completely protected. Also the Editors Code Of Practise is to make sure nothing is
published that could offend someone which is under the IPSO (Independent Press
Standards Organisation).
DIGITAL AUDIO PRODUCTION (RADIO,
PODCASTS E.T.C)
Radios are funded by their advertiser eg
Websites and commercials. They are also
hosted by their ‘parent companies’ for
example Greater Media. Some bigger
companies like the BBC are government
funded as they are one of the main
channels in Great Britain. A private
business man may take an interest in your
radio/podcast and might invest into it for a
share of your profits if they think that it is
going to do well, however this is
sometimes extremely hard to get people to
spend their money on just an idea.
DIGITAL AUDIO PRODUCTION (RADIO,
PODCASTS E.T.C)
In order to make a successful radio/podcast there are certain
things that you need to follow. Having set times and for your staff
to be able to meet deadlines is important as you need to know
what's going on when and what is happening next. The
equipment need a microphone, headphones, a boom mic,
recording and editing software and design software. The
availably of this equipment need to be free most of the time as If
you have o wait around for equipment it'll take longer for the
deadlines to be met. A location to set up all the equipment needs
to be found, also storage space to store all the equipment
needed.
DIGITAL AUDIO PRODUCTION (RADIO,
PODCASTS E.T.C)
Ofcom is the UK regulator and competition authority from
the communications industries. It regulates the TV and
radio sectors, fixed line telecoms, mobiles, postal services,
plus the airwaves over which wireless devices operate.
The Electronic Communications Code regulates the legal
relationships between site providers and operators of
electronic communications networks which help to support
the turn out and sustainability of communication
technology infrastructure. Ofcom has an important role in
the Code. Individuals or bodies who would like to acquire
the ‘Code operator’ status must apply to Ofcom. BECTU is
the UK's media and entertainment trade union. Also you
will need to follow the GPDR rules which protects the
users personal data within your company.
WEB PRODUCTION
Sources of finance would be bank loans in order to
fund
However this could be a bad way of funding as you
might not make enough profit back to give back to the
bank. government/council funded projects or private
investors.
Requirements like other sectors would be the
investor/customer would have the final say on what
goes onto and the look of the website.
WEB PRODUCTION
A Web Production takes on average up to 14 weeks, however it
does depend on the type of websites that you are creating and how
you want the to achieve your desired look at the end. A mock up
website page will need to be make so that everyone knows what the
final product might look like and areas for improvement. A location
for a web production can be done virtually anywhere, however there
must be basic facilitates of a computer, keyboard, software, mouse
e.t.c. Also meeting rooms/planning rooms will be need in order for
the team to come together and be on the same page as everyone
else to make sure that everything being done is the way it is
supposed to be done. The employees needed are graphic
designers, web specialist in order for the process of making the
website to be done professionally but also as quickly as possible.
WEB PRODUCTION
There are many different legislation and regulations for the UK.
You must follow these legal requirements in order to run your own
online business. The Data Protection Act 1998 is if you have
online presence and you collect and store information from clients
then you must register under the Data Protection Act 1998. The
Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulation is where you
have online presence where you collect and store clients
information then you must disclose certain information on you
website in a Privacy Policy. The Disability Discrimination is where
you insure that you website can be used by disabled users. In
order for your website not too be copyrighted, you can protect an
entire website using copyright. For Web Production you will need
to comply with the GPRD which protects personal data of the user
which makes sure that people cannot access peoples personal
data within. You will need to follow copyright laws and non-
disclosure agreements. You will need permission and credible
information. You will also have to follow health and safety
regulations. Professional body wise there is UKWDA.

DIGITAL GAMES PRODUCTION
Some digital games are government funned where they will
fund the game the whole way through, they aren’t really
bothered about the profits of the game as they already have
the money. Some digital games are funned by private
investors where they will give you a sum of money for a share
of your business/profit, some private investors will want you to
show them a full thought of plan in order for them to want to
spend money into your game.
DIGITAL GAMES PRODUCTION
Large selling, well developed games can take anywhere from 18
months to 5 years.
Facilities would be animation rooms, media technology labs,
sound recording studios etc.
Location is usually in cities which are more accessible and
games are easily transported. Employees needed would be
Lead Designer & Writer,
Game Designers, Programmers, Producer.
DIGITAL GAMES PRODUCTION
Video game ratings need to be assed and aged under UK law.
The Games Rating Authority which is then part of the Video
Standards Council, rates games using the PEGI system.
Games which carry a PEGI 12, 16 or 18 rating cannot be sold
or hired to persons below the age shown, they need to show id
in order to be sold the game if they are old enough. People that
sell games to children under the age are now liable for
imprisonment or a fine. Digital games production must comply
with the GPRD which protects people personal data.
