The Gathering of God’s People
Processional Hymn 564 “Lead us, heavenly Father”

(Mannheim)

The Penitential Rite
The sacrifice of God is a broken and contrite heart. O God, you
will not despise.

Dear friends in Christ, as we prepare to worship almighty God,
let us with penitent and obedient hearts confess our sins, that we
may obtain forgiveness by God’s infinite goodness and mercy.

Silence

All: Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned
against you in thought, word and deed, by what we have
done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved
you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours
as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent.
For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and
forgive us, that we may delight in your will, and walk in
your ways to the glory of your name. Amen.
Almighty God, have mercy upon us, pardon and deliver us from
all our sins, confirm and strengthen us in all goodness, and keep
us in eternal life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Kyrie Eleison
Kyrie eleison Lord, have mercy
Christe eleison Christ, Have mercy
Kyrie eleison Lord, have mercy

Collect for the Day: Most merciful God, by the death
and resurrection of your Son Jesus Christ, you
created humanity anew. May the power of his
victorious cross transform those who turn in
faith to him who lives and reigns with you and
the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

A READING FROM THE BOOK OF JEREMIAH 31: 31–34
                                          read by Jan Booker
The days are surely coming, says the Lord, when I
will make a new covenant with the house of Israel
and the house of Judah. It will not be like the
covenant that I made with their ancestors when I
took them by the hand to bring them out of the land
of Egypt—a covenant that they broke, though I was
their husband, says the Lord. But this is the
covenant that I will make with the house of Israel
after those days, says the Lord: I will put my law
within them, and I will write it on their hearts; and I
will be their God, and they shall be my people. No
longer shall they teach one another, or say to each
other, “Know the Lord,” for they shall all know me,
from the least of them to the greatest, says the Lord;
for I will forgive their iniquity, and remember their
sin no more.

Hear what the Spirit is saying to God’s People.
Thanks be to God.

PSALM 119: 9-16 (Tone III.4)
How shall a young man cleanse his way *
  By keeping to your words.

With my whole heart I seek you; *
let me not stray from your com-mand-ments.
I treasure your pro-mise in my heart, *
that I may not sin a-gainst you.
Blessed are you O LORD; *
  instruct me in your sta-tutes.
With my lips will I recite *
all the judgments of your mouth.
I have taken greater delight in the way of your decrees
* than in all manner of ri-ches.
  I will meditate on your com-mand-ments *
and give attention to your ways.
My delight is in your sta-tutes; *
I will not for-get your word.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son
  and to the Ho-ly Spi-rit.
As it was in the beginning is now and e-ver shall be
  world without end A-men.

A READING FROM THE LETTER TO THE HEBREWS 5: 5–10
                                   read by Teresa Johnson
Christ did not glorify himself in becoming a high
priest, but was appointed by the one who said to
him, “You are my Son, today I have begotten you”; as
he says also in another place, “You are a priest
forever, according to the order of Melchizedek.” In
the days of his flesh, Jesus offered up prayers and
supplications, with loud cries and tears, to the one
who was able to save him from death, and he was
heard because of his reverent submission. Although
he was a Son, he learned obedience through what he
suffered; and having been made perfect, he became
the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him,
having been designated by God a high priest
according to the order of Melchizedek.

Hear what the Spirit is saying to God’s People.
Thanks be to God.

Gospel Acclamation
Choir: Praise to you, O Christ, King of eternal glory
Praise to you, O Christ, King of eternal glory
All: Praise to you, O Christ, King of eternal glory
Praise to you, O Christ, King of eternal glory
Choir:       If anyone serves me he must follow me;
wherever I am, there must be my servant also,
             says the Lord.
All: Praise to you, O Christ, King of eternal glory
Praise to you, O Christ, King of eternal glory
Gospeller: The Lord be with you.
All: And also with you.
Gospeller: The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ
               according to John 12: 20-33.
All: Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ.
Now among those who went up to worship at the
festival were some Greeks. They came to Philip, who
was from Bethsaida in Galilee, and said to him, “Sir,
we wish to see Jesus.” Philip went and told Andrew;
then Andrew and Philip went and told Jesus. Jesus
answered them, “The hour has come for the Son of
Man to be glorified. Very truly, I tell you, unless a
grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it
remains just a single grain; but if it dies, it bears
much fruit. Those who love their life lose it, and
those who hate their life in this world will keep it for
eternal life. Whoever serves me must follow me, and
where I am, there will my servant be also. Whoever
serves me, the Father will honour. Now my soul is
troubled. And what should I say—‘Father, save me
from this hour’? No, it is for this reason that I have
come to this hour. Father, glorify your name.” Then
a voice came from heaven, “I have glorified it, and I
will glorify it again.” The crowd standing there heard
it and said that it was thunder. Others said, “An
angel has spoken to him.” Jesus answered, “This
voice has come for your sake, not for mine. Now is
the judgement of this world; now the ruler of this
world will be driven out. And I, when I am lifted up
from the earth, will draw all people to myself.” He
said this to indicate the kind of death he was to die.

Gospeller: The Gospel of Christ:
All: Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

Music Notes:
Next Sunday (Palm Sunday) the choir is singing a longer-than-
usual piece of music in an unusual place in the service. Instead
of an organ prelude, the service will begin with a wonderful
work called "Procession of Palms" by Malcolm Williamson, an
Australian born, UK based composer who was Master of the
Queen's Musick until his death in 2003. It is a very fitting way
in which to begin the exuberance of Palm Sunday.
