Leadership is the process of inspiring others to work hard to accomplish important tasks, according to Management 11e. A good leader is someone who is a caring person who isn’t afraid to push their team to accomplish their goals and is able to communicate their vision. A leader inspires effort. They build enthusiasm within their team and help motivate them to reach their full potential.
Many things can make someone a good leader. Yet there are a few set of traits that separate a good leader from a poor leader. You need to have a lot of energy and be able to keep focused on the task ahead. A good leader doesn’t worry about lacking in a certain area, they have the confidence in themselves to know that they know what they are doing. A good leader is honest, intelligent, and very creative in their knowledge of their job. Leaders are able to keep others motivated as well as themselves even when unexpected things come up.
A leadership style is a reoccurring pattern of behaviors exhibited by leaders. There are four different styles of leadership. The autocratic leader uses a command and control leadership. They are concerned with emphasizing tasks over people and retaining authority and information. The human relations style is the complete opposite of the autocratic. They choose to have people over tasks. Laissez-faire focuses on the least amount of effort to get work done. The democratic style of leadership is concerned with both tasks and people.
There are five ways in which leaders make decisions. When a leader chooses to make an authority decision, the manager will make the final decision and pass the information to the group. Consulting individually is a good idea when you are wanting to know everyone's personal opinion on the topic. After consulting with everyone the manager will let the group know the decision. If you are wanting a group discussion the manager will consult the group as a whole. Facilitating the group is a lot like consulting the group, but the manager facilitates the discussion to help the group reach a decision. When delegating the group the manager delegates their authority to define the problem and reach a solution.
Emotional intelligence is the ability to manage our emotions in social relationships. Emotional intelligence is an essential part in leadership development. Daniel Goleman states that, “the higher the rank of the person considered to be a star performer, the more emotional intelligence capabilities showed up as the reason for his or her effectiveness.” A strong leader will possess self awareness, social awareness, be motivated and persistent, and have good relationship management and self-management.
