Ron Herms Chair of the College of Ministry Professor of Biblical Literature and Theology Youth Pastor Head of Evangelical Fellowship of Churches
Ron’s biggest influence on his leadership style was his father. His father raised him within a strict household yet was kind and encouraging. Ron’s home environment caused Ron to become a leader that encompasses many great traits: Patience Joy Conversation – loves to talk with people Strong principals Living with conviction Care for people’s personal lives Humility Life and Experiences
As a leader, Ron’s strengths and weaknesses are: Building and maintaining relationships Collegiality: working with people and leading by example Patience Humility Tendency to procrastinate The inability to put his fist down Lack of authoritarian principles Not comfortable with conflict Life and Experiences
Ron’s father always told him that “leadership is like a turtle on a fencepost”. Within his leadership positions, Ron had a “leadership team” that consisted of “good friends with great talents and abilities that he didn’t have” who helped him to be that “turtle on a fencepost”. “Watership Down” Life and Experiences
As a youth pastor, Ron was challenged by a particular individual within the community. He was not experience in dealing with this sort of conflict and decided to remove them from the organization. Ron notes that he used coercive power in doing so and still feels like he made wrong decision in removing the person to this day. Challenges and Successes
Ron led a group called the Evangelical Fellowship of Churches which was a loosely knit group of 30 churches with around 7000-8000 people. He felt like he led this group successfully and brought great unity among them. He is a relational leader who likes to delegate and allow people to grow and work for themselves. He notes that “its part of the relational equation, you have to trust people”. Challenges and Successes
Leadership is taking responsibility for others and trusting them to do something for their own growth. “A leader will be recognized by his character” Whenever possible, rely on relationship. Relationship is key in leadership. Lead by theological conviction Realize that you didn’t get there by yourself; when in leadership, you are a turtle on a fencepost. Ron’s Philosophy on Leadership
