Editor's Notes
My name is Josh Keck and I will be presenting Admiral William Adama from the TV show BattlestarGalactica.
In order for you to understand Admiral Adama, I need to give you the back story. We begin with the First Cylon War, a major conflict between the humans of the Twelve Worlds and their creations, the robotic Cylons. After twelve years they sign an armistice. 40 years of peace pass until the Cylons return to affect total destruction of their human masters, an event known as the Fall of the 12 Colonies. Only 55,000 people survived
From this point on its simple: humankind is on the run from the machines they created. The machines are winning. The survivors are trying to find their ancestors on a mythical 13th colony, a planet called Earth
As I was watching the show, the character of Commander Adama really made an impression on me. If you haven’t noticed by now, he is portrayed by Edward James Olmos. He is a tight-lipped military man in whose hands the fate of humanity rests. Admiral William Adama is the commanding officer of the BattlestarGalacticaAfter the fall of the 12 Colonies, he is the highest ranking officer left and so he naturally assumes command of the survivors. From the outset, he gives every single survivor of the attack a reason for hope for the future, a goal to strive for: the legend of Earth.
For Adama the transition to being mankind’s leader and protector came pretty easily. His world of uniforms and ranks, codes ofhonor - made it easy for him to assume power. He is a natural war-chief, climbing the ranks throughout a long military career. He started his service as a fighter pilot aboard Galactica late into the First Cylon War, earning commendations for destroying three Cylon Raiders on his very first combat mission. After the first war, he was mustered out of service but eventually became re-commissioned where he rose through the ranks of the peacetime fleet. He was nearing retirement when the Fall of the 12 Colonies changed everything.
Adama has the rare combination of qualities that make up a good leader: He is insightful into the feelings of others, Intuitive in battle, Intelligent and well-read, Able to naturally command the respect of his fleet He has unwavering confidence in his own ability and that of his crew. He is a man capable of adapting whatever situation he’s faced withLastly, Adama is a powerful man.
Adama displays all five bases of power interchangeably.Adama demonstrates expert power as a former fighter pilot. Every time he sends his crew out on a mission or a battle, he knows exactly the danger he’s putting them in and what to do at the helm to keep them alive. He holds the legitimate power of his rank as admiral; and along with that comes both reward power and coercive power. An example of his use of the coercive power was when he was faced with a labor strike on a fuel refiner ship – he knew they needed the fuel to stay alive - sohe forces the union leader, a chief officer of his own crew, to call off the strike by threatening to shoot the man’s wife. As you can gather from this video, it was necessary at times for Adama to enforce his power by coercion and tyranny in order to protect the order of his ship for the sake of humanity. The culture he bred on his ship was one of simple militaristic compliance: “Follow the chain of command or we all die”
Adama also embodies referent power – most of the time his crew would do anything for him – in their final mission, a mission that seemed suicidal, he asked his crew for volunteers to go with him. As you can see from this photo, nearly one third of his remaining crew volunteered their lives to follow Admiral Adama on this final mission. In another instance,he liberated his people from a Cylon occupation and they treated him like a hero. Show video
AdmiralAdama faced countless obstacles while being in command. There was the constant threat of Cylon attacks. At one point, the search for food lead the entire fleet through a radioactive stellar cluster in order to reach an algae planet. When the fleet is facing a fuel shortage; the only possible relief comes from an active and heavily armed enemy Cylon fuel refinery. Faced with that situation - Adamadecides then to stop running and launch his first offensive against the enemy. Perhaps the greatest obstacle was the Coup d'état initiated by his own crew. After Adama starts considering an alliance with a faction of Rebel Cylons, members of his own crew start a mutiny against him. When Adama has the chance to escape capture by leaving his ship, he instead decides to stay behind to retake his ship. He is captured, tried, and sentenced to death by firing squad. However, Adama convinces his own executioners to aid him in recapturing the ship.
AdmiralAdama displays many forms of leadership throughout his command. He takes a situational approach, changing his style of leadership as the situation demands. He is a survivor, able to adapt and change. But all the while he keeps his eye on the ultimate goal.Recall the Law of Navigation: "Being able to navigate for others… you've got to have faith that you can take your people all the way. If you can't confidently make the trip in your mind, you're not going to be able to take it in real life.” Adama successfully led the remaining human population to their new home Earth. It wasn’t the Earth they expected, but it was the Earth they were going to create. He saw the path, navigated through the obstacles, and he came through for his people, reaching their ultimate goal of finding a new home. Thank you for listening to my presentation.
