Leadership and Management
DB 1 Instructor -Jeoffrey Jenkins
Dawn M. Gibson (2015)
Colorado Technical University
Leadership and management can either be used together or separately. It is hoped that
management would have good leadership skills and knowledge. To have a good work place both
of these need to be strong and working together. Management having good leadership help their
employees gain confidence as well as find ways to encourage workers to become the best they
can be. They need to encourage workers to come to them with ideas, because fresh ideas and
outlooks may be what are needed. They do not have to use them but some ideas that would
otherwise be unthought-of would be exactly what the company needs. By including workers your
management has leadership as well as gained respect and loyalty from their crew. These also
work with customers or any business they will work with or encounter. (Board, 2015)
Separately, they should also come hand in hand. It does not work if the two are not on the
same page. Many times businesses and company hire based on hear-say, favoritism, or by who
they know and NOT by how well the job will be done. This cause more havoc in the work place
and huge amount of distress. This is where the workplace is made or broke in being successful.
You have to consider and be open to all sides of the situation. This will be talked about when
discussing effective and ineffective leadership and management. (Glamuzina, 2015)
What is leadership?
There are six types of leadership as well as ineffective or effective leadership. Leadership
should be a person who is adaptable to situation and able to take a certain amount of stress. You
won’t please everyone, but how well your leadership is depends on how well the workplace runs.
Smooth like waves among the beach or rough like the waves in the middle of the storm. How the
leadership is done depends on success or failure. Leadership is exactly what it sounds like they
lead. They lead their ship and how they run their ship determines on how smooth or rough things
are done. Should the leader of a ship not take time to look over the ship for damage or faults,
they would be directly responsible should a ship take on water, or sails that may need repairing.
Food supply or anything needed to make the trip safe including fresh water supply. The crew
hired based on their experience and knowledge. Would you hire a captain who has never sailed?
A captain who has never trained? The crew would you hire based on those you need, cheaper
pay? Just to get a crew? It would be wise to ensure 95% of the crew had experience, were hard
workers and did their work. These sounds like a manager and in some ways it is you are
managing your boat and team. This is where management and leadership can be combined. The
captain would be more like a manager because he manages the crew. He gives them
responsibility and expects them to know what they are doing, that they have experience, and will
do a good job. This is no different than a work place. The leadership makes a difference on how
the work place plays out. If you lead by example, they will see that you are one of the team.
Compliment your workers see what their strong and weak points are and always encourage them.
Should you have a worker who has a disability see that you compliment them and encourage
them to do their best and if people cause them issues you should sit them down for a talk. People
in the work place can be like gangs, they make sort out people to sabotage because a person has a
grudge or wants the job. This should be discouraged immediately. The leader and manager
should have zero tolerance for bad behavior. Many people who have disabilities are very hard
workers and may need a regular routine. Negative attitudes towards them cause much distress
and bad outcomes. The leadership basically decides to lead a good team or lead a bad team, and
depending on your customers this may determine how well the service is received. Effective or
ineffective leaders are the result. Effective leaders are positive and encouraging, ineffective
leaders are negative and discouraging. Effective leaders usually can always find a positive
compliment or encouraging words to (Glamuzina, 2015) those who may be insecure or with
issues. Ineffective leader have no patience and do not give room for mistakes.
I prefer to be a leader now, now in the past I would have said neither. I tend to keep to
myself and I don’t need attention. I used to think leaders and managers thrived on getting
attention. I now know both of these are very important roles to be taken seriously. I used to be
very quiet, reserved and not outspoken. It comes from how you are raised, but also a personality,
I was shy. Time and experience changes people; due to my life experiences I have seen a lot of
things wrong. I have seen grave injustices, like Leonard Peltier being imprisoned for crimes he
did not commit while our own government knows he is 100% innocent. That evidence was
planted; documents were forged and illegal, that Leonard was illegally taken from Canada with
falsified documents. Yet he remains in prison, many issues around this is so unjustified because
they refuse to admit they made mistakes. This is why people stand up or start to become leaders.
This can also be confusing as the opposing party will call them “troublemakers”, “instigators”,
“rebels” and even “terrorists” when they fight back. This is what can happen in work places
when ineffective management and leadership begin and the workplace falls apart.
I was raised to be respectful especially to my elders, which is why the silent tongue at times.
You did as you were told; as you became a teenager you became more vocal and perhaps
rebellish. The work place is the same, you encourage your workers and treat them with respect
and this is a two way street. It is actually a three way the management, the workers and the
customers. People hired based on who they know, management who looks the other way when
things are done wrong, and leadership, leadership can be good or bad. Does the leadership follow
these policies they know is wrong?? Or do they step up and take a stand? I have never been one
for public speaking, I rarely will volunteer to speak for a group, and however, when things get so
poor sometimes you have to take a stand. If management makes rules, they should also follow
them one thing that irritates me is a manager who declare cell phone off limits on company time.
This manger (or boss) in meetings uses the cell phone, while approaching you and beginning a
conversation, will play with their cell phone… this is IN effective management and very poor
tactics which does not deserve respect. Management who sees workers using their cells on
company time and selectively write up or verbally reprimands certain people and not others are
ineffective and losses respect as well. Effective management treats everyone exactly the same,
with special exclusions such as family emergencies.
I am in some ways a leader but I will still stand back, unless pushed by poor management.
Those who have gotten away with things will say I am a troublemaker, which is fine. (I have to
be bad at something). I observe and listen and try to not make accusations until I have all the
facts. We have a closed Union workplace, and I for one like it this way. There are those who
dislike it and do not understand fully why Unions were created. I could say that their unknown
knowledge is not my problem but I would be white washing and in lala land. It IS my problem
because these people need to understand why, because a workplace who doesn’t care has already
failed. People who are wrongly terminated and refuse to fight saying they don’t care are defeatist
and fail themselves. They failed themselves because they did not fight for what they deserved. It
would be like being arrested and saying …ok that’s how life is. It would be insane. Leadership
will take the person to the side and explain to them why they need to fight this to know YOU are
willing to be a target for them (Board, 2015). This would not be for popularity but for justice!!
This would be because you know this person is worth the fight. I am shocked how many people
who just walk away. It work the same way when I hear people gossip or accuse, I will say how
do you know? How do you know the person telling you is right? How do you know this other
person didn’t say or do it? I have been called out for asking this, because they thought I was
accusing them, but no there are 3peopel how do you know the other one didn’t do it. It has
nothing to do with if I like someone or not. It matters where the information came from.
Effective leaders and management will take both parties and sit them down to discuss the issues
at hand when facing each other, the one lying usually will change their attitude and/or story. This
is a better way of resolving issue than just choosing sides.

I could say that their unknown knowledge is not my problem but I would be white washing and in lala land. It IS my problem because these people need to understand why, because a workplace who doesn’t care has already
  • 5. failed. People who are wrongly terminated and refuse to fight saying they don’t care are defeatist and fail themselves. They failed themselves because they did not fight for what they deserved. It would be like being arrested and saying …ok that’s how life is. It would be insane. Leadership will take the person to the side and explain to them why they need to fight this to know YOU are willing to be a target for them (Board, 2015). This would not be for popularity but for justice!! This would be because you know this person is worth the fight. I am shocked how many people who just walk away. It work the same way when I hear people gossip or accuse, I will say how do you know? How do you know the person telling you is right? How do you know this other person didn’t say or do it? I have been called out for asking this, because they thought I was accusing them, but no there are 3peopel how do you know the other one didn’t do it. It has nothing to do with if I like someone or not. It matters where the information came from. Effective leaders and management will take both parties and sit them down to discuss the issues at hand when facing each other, the one lying usually will change their attitude and/or story. This is a better way of resolving issue than just choosing sides. References: Board, E. (2015). Leadership and Ethical Decision Making. [VitalSource Bookshelf version].
