Editor's Notes
Questions are:
How does riding horses help those who are handicapped, regain a connection?
Does it help everyone? Why or why not
I have seen myself the effects and know of several places that uses horses for therapy. They have other animals used to help with therapy as well, cats, often dogs, cattle, monkeys as well. The main ones in the news are monkeys, horses and dogs. It is amazing to see wounded warriors receiving this help, through wounded warrior’s project. Parolees and pitbulls, Abused woman and horses through Bethlehem Farms, gives both a second chance. Autism and horse have help these kids come to a standing of being able to “communicate” more. Music also helps this process. So I say horses helping the hurt. Horses for me have always been healing. They understand you, give your legs, or running shoes if you are unable to run, feel of freedom and security one trust is formed and both bond. They are my heart and soul, my lifeblood.
Research will be mixed. I am uncertain how I will do quantitative, but qualitative will be easy. Action has been done and will be used as well.
The problems that I see are these:
Does it help everyone? ( people who love animals this is easy to heal by them,)
Dangers are if people how do this kind of work do not have proper equipment or staff to properly help and watch each individual.
All must be documented and filming would be a grand Idea. The prices in our area in my opinion are outrageous. When I started my clientele I was charging $15/ hr while I was told most charged $30 for a ½ and most of that time was spent on preparing the horse. I went to $20/ hour which is fair. I enjoy working with horse as well as enjoy seeing the smiles and gratefulness of other to have this same experience. To me that is a major part of the payment. The young lady I help had same symptoms as MS and after 5-10 mins of riding she was like anyone else.
The purpose or mission is helping people, helping horses. To help those hurt mentally, physically, emotionally and financially have a place to go and find a way to heal. I do not see it working if people are negative. Negative always puts a kink in the works. The more this research is developed and works the more horse will once again be able to have a purpose other than for financial purposes. There are many ways to heal.. Medically as well as simple as time time in nature, fishing, hiking, walking and then there is horses..
The hypothesis is the prediction the study will find . The study will find a special connection between horse and rider. The movements of the horse is like the movement of a person walking. Even if the horse is not rideable, just having one is relaxing to watch. Groom and spend time with.
Horse become family just like humans do.(This is father, mother, and son). Handicap can be mental emotional or physical. Animals recover some what faster. Therapy for both and learning to communicate is very important. Horse teach children how to be responsible, within time, they gain confidence as they learn to care for the horses, who cannot always care for themselves.
Studies have been done, written documentation, and videos to show that there is something special about horses and their handicapped riders. They help those who are hurt. I have witnesses this as well. The horses movement is much like our movement when walking. They give legs to those who can not walk. Those who could not run feel free when trotting or running their horses. Nature seems to heal many as it is quiet, patient, and peaceful. (disabledsportsusa.org )
Through research findings it has been proven to help stimulate riders. It is not known exactly how it works, but it is believed the warmth of the horse and the movement, like we move when walking. The purpose of this statement is to make people aware of the benefits. These programs my save equine live as well as humans. Healing from the inside out. This makes a win- win situation for all involved. The smiles and the confidence they gain are so well worth it. Happy faces, growth in confidence, and a way to cope with harsh situations.

Halter stands for handicapped athletes learning to enjoy riding. Equine therapy program increases self-confidence and pride. They help to increase strength and balance. Patience is required and received. Horse help the handicap have a level field.
Null statement: Funds to keep operations running smoothly and to help as many as possible the blind, wheel chaired bound, MS, and autism.
Lanning, B. A. & Krenek, N. (2013) Guest Editorial: Examining effects of equine-assisted activities to help combat veterans improve quality of life. [Journal of rehabilitation research and development], 50(8). vii-xiii, doi: 10. 1682/ JRRD. 2013. 07. 0154.
PATH is much like the Wounded Warriors project. PATH is dedicated to helping combat veterans. It was originally called Horses for heroes. PATH helps veterans coming home from combat duty to cope with re-entering civilian life. Horses have always been used to boost morale. They are also bringing back the mounted police. Therapeutic riding was first recorded in 1875. A French physician Chassaign stated riding helps certain neurological paralysis.
PATH uses:
Qualitative data- intervention-post war life
Quantitative data- changes experienced by participants
Questionnaires to participants reveal levels of depression, guilt, loss of interest, and feeling lost.
They had programs such as Operations Iraqi freedom, Operation enduring freedom, and Operation new Dawn.
Horses increased confidence, energy levels, and participation in society
Question included before during and after combat.
Null: small groups, lack of control groups, military veterans do not show true emotions.
Mink, M. (2008) Healing back at “the ranch”. Credit Union Magazine. 74(2).24.
Mink talks how horses help improve lives of the children through therapeutic riding. The eagle community employs fund raising to donate to Canyon Acres Residential Treatment center. This is for kids 6 years to 12, who have been abused and neglected. Horses help to heal and teach the children patience. This helps kids improve mentally and artistically.
Pittman, A. (2012) Rainbow Riders conclude summer with awards ceremony. Retrieved from http://www.reviewatlas.com/article/20120830/News/308309971.
Rainbow riders explain that horses help heal the handicapped on several levels. Physical because the horses movements are equal to the humans walk. Emotional and mental disabilities, because the horse, becomes the feet, for the handicapped rider. On the horse they become like everyone else, it gives them a more level ground. The horse does not just help the handicapped but those who are hurting emotionally, physically, and mentally. The horse does not judge, they except people as they are unconditional love.
The null statement would be funding to keep these stables running and operating. Enough
Volunteers to help run the place.

Free Rein helps people with disabilities/ injuries, to regain strength, confidence, and balance. Each person has their own schedule. For Free Rein, to become a 501(c03 non-profit, they have to pass the PATH inspection.
Wounded Warrior Project helps veteran who come back from combat. This restricts kids under 4 years or under 190 pounds. They are endorsed by St. Luke’s. Children with autism feel more relaxed and begin to communicate. They have 130 volunteers and 65 riders.
Null: Like the others funding and volunteers are much needed as it keeps them running. To keep the cost of participants this is very much relied upon. Horses need care, volunteers to help those who have handicaps. This program covers a wider range of people. 4 years to older, which people who walk the horse as well as walk by the rider is needed for some.
Skriloff, D. (2007) Horses can be used for healing. Hudson Valley Business Journal, 18(30), 13.
Skriloff (2007) explains how horses help the handicapped, who suffer from physical and
emotional issues. Lynn Kuropatkin, says she witnesses miracles from those who are isolated, become more social, those who do not talk, begin to speak. Horses stimulate through motion. They run with volunteers and explain the history of horses used for healing. 460 B.C., it was used but took sometimes for it to take hold here, 1950.
The characteristics are the bonds between horse and rider. They depends on each other. The horse is often the legs for those who can not walk. Even if they do not ride horses, grooming alone has it’s benefits. This has been shown with pitbull and parolees and Bethlehem Farms where abuse woman are paired with abused horse. Observing the person before this begins until given a week the observation is how they become like everyone else in moving. Animals have been used for centuries.
Qualitative uses several methods to accomplish the outcome. Examples are saddles, that have been modified to help rider stay on and not leave. Mount blocks, became stairs, or a ramp for wheelchairs. The idea is to find improvements. They have even taught horse to lie down so handicaps can just sit down.
