Editor's Notes
Good morning everyone, my name is Andrew Adeniyi and I am the current president of the Gamma Eta Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. Brother Franklin contacted me earlier this week and asked me to share some of my thoughts on leadership and what has worked well for our chapter with you all today. We are all Alpha Men in this room, therefore we are ALL leaders. With that being said, how do you lead amongst leaders? Take a second to think about that question. Hopefully during this presentation I can share some best practices that I try to enforce on my chapter to help us ALL get closer to answering that question.
Before I get into the presentation, I would like to give you guys a little bit of insight into my leadership experience. These are the major positions and venues I have been able to learn in and grow as a leader.
As we all know, keeping business and pleasure separate within your chapters can be a challenging task. This is something that my chapter often struggles with. Some ways we have been able to improve our communication is to utilize certain means for business and some for brotherhood. When conducting business outside of chapter, we use a chapter listserv for correspondence. Proposals that need to get voted on in chapter must be submitted to the listserv 48 hours prior to the start of chapter. This allows for brothers to review the proposals well in advance so discussion on the proposal will be more efficient in chapter. Brotherhood is obviously a very important aspect of the fraternity as well. Aside from having brotherhoods, we also have various chats to communicate with each other. Most brothers have a chat with their line brothers, a chat with only active members, and a chat with all active and old head GH brothers. We use the active member chat for only chapter related business but this can sometimes turn into another avenue to socialize so you must be careful with that. The other two chats are almost solely for brotherhood and socializing.
As Alphas, we must remember that we are our brother’s keeper. This means that we must hold each other accountable for our actions. My chapter does this through the use of fines. Our parliamentarian is responsible for issuing fines to brothers who break the rules such as being late to an event or not following the dress code at chapter. It is never fun to fine your brother but is often necessary to hold them accountable. If brothers do not pay their fines in a timely manner, they lose voting privileges in chapter until the amount is paid. Another way we hold brothers accountable is through an academic contract. For brothers who fall below the 2.5 GPA mark cumulatively, they must attend office hours a particular amount of times per week. The number of visits is agreed upon by myself and the the brother. This is used as a support mechanism for brothers in addition to the stipulations that the region places on brothers for poor academic performance. We also support brothers in chapter during a “Kudos” section. This portion of chapter is dedicated to giving a round of applause to brothers who have done something noteworthy in the previous week.
Although the financial department is one in which I think our chapter has the most room for improvement, there are some things that we do particularly well. I mentioned earlier how proposals must be submitted to our listserv 48 hours prior to the start of chapter. In every proposal there must be a financial section that details the budget of the program. This helps us keep tabs on our spending. We also strive to create a budget for the year. The more documentation we have from previous years, the more accurate we can make our budget. Brothers may have to make purchases with their own money if they cannot get ahold of the chapter card but they get reimbursed as soon as possible as long as they keep their receipt. We only allow the President, Treasurer and Financial Secretary access to the finances of the chapter. This helps us avoid and mishandling of finances.
One method I propose to ensure you are being the best leader you can be is the Circle of Leadership. The Circle of Leadership consists of you teaching, coaching, and training a brother for a particular task, then delegating tasks to that brother, and lastly, providing feedback. This management practice enables you to know if a brother was taught the correct way to do various tasks and fully understands what the standards are. Once you are confident that they understand everything that you trained them on, you should be able to delegate tasks to them freely. “Everything that is delegated, must be supervised.” This is a quote I learned from ALDI and have started to live by professionally. The quote is emphasizing how important it is to provide feedback to someone after they have performed the task that you delegated to them. The Circle of Leadership is an excellent way to get the most out of your brothers.
