Rene Goscinny
(1926-1977)
AUTHOR
Goscinny was born in Paris in 1926, to a
family of Jewish immigrants from Poland. His
parents were Stanisław Simkha Gościnny, a
chemical engineer, from Warsaw, Poland
and Anna Bereśniak-Gościnna from
Chodorków, part of Ukraine. Goscinny's
grandfather, Abraham Lazare Berezniak,
founded a printing company. Claude, René's
older brother was born six years earlier, on
10 December 1920. Stanisław and Anna had
met in Paris and married in 1919. The
Gościnnys moved to Buenos Aires,
Argentina, two years after René's birth,
because of a chemical engineer post
Stanisław had obtained there. He spent a
happy childhood in Buenos Aires, and
studied in the French schools there. He had
a habit of being the "class clown", probably
to compensate for a natural shyness. He
started drawing very early on, inspired by the
illustrated stories which he enjoyed reading.
SKETCHMAN
Sempé was expelled from school
as a young man, and then failed to
pass exams for the post office, a
bank and the railroad. He then
found work selling tooth powder as
a door-to-door salesman and also
worked delivering wine by bicycle
in the Gironde. After lying about his
age, he joined the army in 1950,
since it was "the only place that
would give me a job and a bed," he
subsequently explained, and would
occasionally get into trouble for
drawing while he was supposed to
be keeping watch during guard
duty. After being discharged from
the army, he moved to Paris and
began working with René
Goscinny.

REVIEW
A bestseller in France since 1959, this uproarious
translation is a time warp to a kind of children's book you
don't see much anymore. Rene Goscinny, author of
the ’Asterix’ series, imbues his short, funny stories with no
deeper meaning, no character development, and above all,
no life lessons. All of the characters are badly behaved but
oddly charming. These manage to amuse without resorting
to the vulgarity relied upon by so many modern authors.
Filled with tiny cartoons by New Yorker artist Jean-Jacques
Sempé that perfectly match the text, this will keep many
children amused for hours, though the more worldly may
find it tepid. It is tepid, but that can be a virtue. If you're
looking for a bedtime read-aloud that will get your kids
giggling without getting them too riled up, you could hardly
do better.
