LeAnn Rimes will sing the national anthem at the 2009 Kentucky Derby, making her the first national recording artist to perform it at Churchill Downs. Her performance will begin a new tradition of having a celebrity singer do the anthem on Derby Day. The 135th Kentucky Derby will be held on May 2nd, with the Fort Knox Army Band also performing their usual instrumental version of the anthem.

Churchill Downs says Rimes will be the first national recording artist to sing "The Star- Spangled Banner" at the historic racetrack in Louisville, Ky., as part of the Derby Day ceremonies. The 135th Run for the Roses will be held May 2. Churchill Downs Senior Vice President Kevin Flanery says Rimes' performance will "begin a 21st-century Derby tradition." The track says the Fort Knox Army Band will continue its tradition of performing an instrumental version of the national anthem. The 26-year-old Rimes is a two-time Grammy winner.
