This is a legal advice service run on a pro bono basis by Solicitor Lecturers at Coventry
University.Studentshave the opportunityto make a regular commitment to attend and are
able to give advice subject to the supervision of Solicitors.
 The ability to take instructions from clients and to ask appropriate questions to
ensure that the full picture is obtained
 Carrying out legal research on areas of law not covered by the course to be able to
provide correct advice
 Givingdetailedadvice astothe meritsof client cases,including advising clients if no
legal remedies are available to them
 Writing draft letters of advice on unfair dismissal claims
 Keeping accurate and succinct client records to ensure that others are able to pick
up and deal with cases

I have takenthe opportunityto complete a number of short term placements in legal firms
rangingfromlocal practices(WrightHassell) toCityfirms(FieldFisherWaterhouse).This has
been invaluable in confirming my desire to qualify as a solicitor and afforded observation
opportunities.
 Watched the negotiations for a major commercial merger and acquisition
 Had the opportunity to work on some papers for a domestic conveyancing
transaction
 Attended court with a Solicitor to hear a bail application
 Observed a case in the County Court
 Sat on reception providing first line advice to prospective clients as to whether or
not the firm would be able to help them
Additional Information
I have taken the opportunity to take part in University mooting. I enormously enjoyed the
challenge of researchingcase law,preparingskeletonargumentsandpresentingthemin the
moot. I relished the need to think quickly to counter arguments put forward by the other
side and enjoyed the team work elements of the exercise. My team came second in the
Coventry Competition in 2012. I am a fluent speaker of xxxx languages. I am a member of
the universityhockeyteamandenjoythe teamwork.Myteamhas beenverysuccessful this
year winning 6 out of 8 of its matches.
