Civil liability is the obligation to repair or compensate others for damages resulting from one's acts. There are two types of civil liability: contractual liability which deals with non-respect of contractual terms, and tortuous liability which can result from virtually any act. Civil liability requires that there is damage, an act, and a causal link between the act and the damage. Criminal liability aims to punish violations of law and does not repair damages, but applies more restrictively than civil liability.
