important part of Philippine culture and tradition.
Many of these fiestas feature large synchronized
group dances where performers wear colorful
costumes and makeup and use various props.
In this lesson, you will get to know the roots of
some of these festival dances, and how festival
dance, as a physical activity, can help in
optimizing one’s health.

10. LESSON PROPER
Festival dances are performed by a group of
people who share the same culture to the powerful
rhythms of percussion instruments. It also
highlights the culture of the people by depicting
their way of life via motions, clothing, and utensils
unique to their home country. The Sinulog Grand
Parade will take place on the 3rd Sunday of
January in Cebu City, Philippines.
11. What is the meaning of Sinulog?
The phrase Sinulog derives from the Cebuano
adverb sulog, which roughly translates to "like Water
current movement" and defines the dance's forward
backward movement. To the beat of drums, the
dancers take two steps forward and one step
backward.
12. Why is Sinulog important?
In terms of religious significance,
the festival is a revisit of the novena
prayers, masses, and procession is
a revisiting of piety and atonement
for sins.
13. What does Pit Senyor mean?
'Pit Senyor' refers to the Holy Child Senior
Sto Nino de Cebu to whom the feast is
dedicated. The word "senyor" is a title of
respect given to males and means 'Senior'
or 'Pit' in Cebuanese.
