This document discusses the purpose and challenges of laptop learning seminars at Castilleja School in August 2010. It notes that laptops can be used for both intellectual exploration and mass distraction. The big question is how to use laptops and other technologies to personalize learning, manage information, engage with issues, publish work, build things, have fun, develop empathy and awareness. It also references challenges teachers may face in using new technologies in the classroom.
In my presentation I am addressing a set of discouraging questions that might come through your ming while considering for your first public talk.
In these slides I run through these questions providing counter arguments for each of them.

Learn all about Gmail, a free email service, set-up an account, and learn the basics of creating, sending, and forwarding a message.
My presentation to the Scottish Learning Festival on Virtual Worlds. I looked at uses of virtual worlds in different subject areas and focused on Science in particular. We saw how Second Life was used in a Global Science at the High School for Global Citizenship in New York. Lastly we looked at the barriers, costs and safety aspects of using virtual worlds.

March 25th, 2009 Presentation to the Board at Castilleja. In this presentation we talked about a variety of topics relating to learning in an age of information abundance. We also took a look at several student learning artifacts.
13. Big Question... "how can we use our laptops (and other technologies) to personalize learning, manage complex streams of information, interrogate resource validity, engage with local and global issues, publish for a large audience, build cool stuff, have a bit of fun, develop empathy, network with others and expand our cultural competencies and awareness?"

We want all students to start on the first day with the basic skills to be successful with their laptop learning instruments. Students are, without a doubt, our greatest allies in this effort. Have an savvy student body will help ensure early success We have a new wireless network and new printers in place...we want to have all of you onsite before school begins to make sure that your equipment works with the new wireless system and printers. We've been using our laptops for years at Castilleja, we already know this? Well, that is kinda true, but there is a difference. Previously, laptop use on campus was voluntary, so not everyone had their computers on campus each day. This year all 420 students will have their computers, which changes things. From a technology support standpoint, it makes sense for us to conduct these seminars in this fashion to increase our community skill base. Castilleja has taken the approach that we value open, unfiltered, uncensored access to the Internet. With this approach comes a great deal of responsibility on the part of our community members.
