Chapter 1 Summary
Luis Rodriguez talks about his memory back in when he was 9 years old. It is a rainy night in Los Angeles, and his father is driving the family car. Luis is in the back seat with his older brother Jose Rene, and his two younger sisters, Ana Virginia and Gloria Estela. Their parents Alfonso and Maria Estela are arguing in the front seat. Maria wants her children and her husband go back to their hometown of Mexico. Alfonso refuses to go with them. Luis doesn’t really care about this kind of business because his family has been moving from place to place since he can remember stuff. When his family lived in Mexico, Alfonso was the principal of their town's high school. He lost his job in 1956 in some reason. Then it takes Alfonso to move his family to Los Angeles. They settled in Watts. Watts is an industrial area but cheap labor. Alfonso works in construction and manufacturing. Maria Estela cleans home and works in a factory. Luis older brother Jose always beats him up and tells neighborhoods kids to do so. Luis has difficulties to be in the classroom in LA at first because he is poor ability in English. But later on, he finally has some friends, and they are Jamie and Earl. Alfonso finds a good job in a high school that teaches students Spanish. With that good amount of income, Alfonso moves to a new area with better house, car and furniture. However, the students in that school has strong against with his accent so they decided to fire him. A Sample Qualitative Dissertation Proposal
This proposal examines language brokering among Mexican immigrant families living in the Midwest through a multiple case study. Daisy Bates was a prominent civil rights activist and journalist who played a key role in the desegregation of Little Rock Central High School in 1957. She grew up in Arkansas, operated the Arkansas State Press with her husband, and served as president of the state NAACP chapter. Bates guided nine Black students in their successful enrollment at Central High and documented the opposition they faced in her memoir The Long Shadow of Little Rock. Throughout her life and career, Bates fought against segregation and advocated for racial equality.

Author Profile
Denise Chávez was born in the desert Southwest, and she writes about the Native Americans, Mexican Americans, Anglo-Americans, and others who provide the region’s rich cultural tapestry. Her works consistently focus on the strength and endurance of ordinary working-class Latino women.
Chávez had twelve years of Catholic schooling and started writing diaries and skits while still in elementary school. She received her bachelor of arts degree in theater from New Mexico State University in 1971, her master of fine arts in theater from Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas, in 1974, and her master of arts in creative writing from the University of New Mexico in 1984. During her school years she worked in a variety of jobs — in a hospital, in an art gallery, and in public relations. She also wrote poetry, fiction, and drama, always with emphasis on the lives of women. She taught at Northern New Mexico Community College, the University of Houston, Artist-in-the-Schools programs, and writers’ workshops.
Chávez has written numerous plays and literary pieces, which she often performed or directed, including a national tour with her one-woman performance piece. Her plays have been produced throughout the United States and Europe. Her plays (mostly unpublished), written in English and Spanish, include Novitiates (1971), The Flying Tortilla Man (1975), Rainy Day Waterloo (1976), The Third Door (1978), Sí, hay posada (1980), The Green Madonna (1982), La morenita (1983), El más pequeño de mis hijos (1983), Plague-Time (1984), Novena Narrativas (1986), and Language of Vision (1987).
The Last of the Menu Girls, interrelated stories about a young Chicana, and the novel Face of an Angel have established Chávez’s high reputation as a fiction writer. Both works address critical questions of personal and cultural identity with extraordinary wit and compassion. Chávez has a striking ability to create a sense of individual voice for her characters, and she makes that voice resonate for readers who may or may not be familiar with the places and people about whom she writes.

Luis Rodriguez talks about his memory back in when he was 9 years old. It is a rainy night in Los Angeles, and his father is driving the family car. Luis is in the back seat with his older brother Jose Rene, and his two younger sisters, Ana Virginia and Gloria Estela. Their parents Alfonso and Maria Estela are arguing in the front seat. Maria wants her children and her husband go back to their hometown of Mexico. Alfonso refuses to go with them. Luis doesn’t really care about this kind of business because his family has been moving from place to place since he can remember stuff. When his family lived in Mexico, Alfonso was the principal of their town's high school. He lost his job in 1956 in some reason. Then it takes Alfonso to move his family to Los Angeles. They settled in Watts. Watts is an industrial area but cheap labor. Alfonso works in construction and manufacturing. Maria Estela cleans home and works in a factory. Luis older brother Jose always beats him up and tells neighborhoods kids to do so. Luis has difficulties to be in the classroom in LA at first because he is poor ability in English. But later on, he finally has some friends, and they are Jamie and Earl. Alfonso finds a good job in a high school that teaches students Spanish. With that good amount of income, Alfonso moves to a new area with better house, car and furniture. However, the students in that school has strong against with his accent so they decided to fire him. She grew up in Arkansas, operated the Arkansas State Press with her husband, and served as president of the state NAACP chapter. Author Profile
Denise Chávez was born in the desert Southwest, and she writes about the Native Americans, Mexican Americans, Anglo-Americans, and others who provide the region’s rich cultural tapestry. Her works consistently focus on the strength and endurance of ordinary working-class Latino women.
Chávez had twelve years of Catholic schooling and started writing diaries and skits while still in elementary school. She received her bachelor of arts degree in theater from New Mexico State University in 1971, her master of fine arts in theater from Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas, in 1974, and her master of arts in creative writing from the University of New Mexico in 1984. During her school years she worked in a variety of jobs — in a hospital, in an art gallery, and in public relations. She also wrote poetry, fiction, and drama, always with emphasis on the lives of women. She taught at Northern New Mexico Community College, the University of Houston, Artist-in-the-Schools programs, and writers’ workshops.
Chávez has written numerous plays and literary pieces, which she often performed or directed, including a national tour with her one-woman performance piece. Her plays have been produced throughout the United States and Europe. Her plays (mostly unpublished), written in English and Spanish, include Novitiates (1971), The Flying Tortilla Man (1975), Rainy Day Waterloo (1976), The Third Door (1978), Sí, hay posada (1980), The Green Madonna (1982), La morenita (1983), El más pequeño de mis hijos (1983), Plague-Time (1984), Novena Narrativas (1986), and Language of Vision (1987).
The Last of the Menu Girls, interrelated stories about a young Chicana, and the novel Face of an Angel have established Chávez’s high reputation as a fiction writer. Both works address critical questions of personal and cultural identity with extraordinary wit and compassion. Chávez has a striking ability to create a sense of individual voice for her characters, and she makes that voice resonate for readers who may or may not be familiar with the places and people about whom she writes.

Healing is the body’s response to injury in an attempt to restore normal structure and functions.
Healing can occur in two ways: Regeneration and Repair
There are 4 phases of wound healing: hemostasis, inflammation, proliferation, and remodeling. This document also describes the mechanism of wound healing. Factors that affect healing include infection, uncontrolled diabetes, poor nutrition, age, anemia, the presence of foreign bodies, etc.
Complications of wound healing like infection, hyperpigmentation of scar, contractures, and keloid formation.

An assistant professor at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, Texas, Melita Garza pursues research on English- and Spanish-language journalism in the 20th century and how the media socially construct reality. As a Chicago Tribune staff writer, Melita Garza authored a feature in 1995 on AJ Verdelle, who wrote about life in the 1960s from an African-American perspective in her debut novel, The Good Negress. A key theme posed in the book involves the "high- handed assimilationist” ethos prevalent within the educational system of the time.
- 3. For the protagonist, 12-year-old Denise, her part-time job cleaning bathrooms and Southern American English dialect are seen as a barrier to advancement. Her teacher even bars her from after-school diction classes, which are her only route to higher education and “speak(ing) the language of the nation.” Ms. Verdelle based the story on her own experiences as she struggled to adapt to academic life at the University of Chicago, where she ultimately excelled. By the late 1980s, Ms. Verdelle had broken through a number of the barriers, portrayed in intimate terms through the protagonist, and later founded a statistics and analysis company based in New York.
