Langkawi Geopark There are two well known mountains in the heart of Langkawi Island, Gunung Raya and Gunung MaChinchang Added to the two and appearing to separate them is a hill called Bukit Sawar
Langkawi Geopark If you look hard at Gunung MaChinchang located at 700m above sea level, you can actually see it is facing to its 850m high neighbor, Gunung Raya (the island’s highest mountain) The legendary Gunung MaChinchang, Langkawi’s second highest peak was believed to have once been a giant, named MaChinchang, who was cursed to become a mountain of stone
Langkawi Geopark Fables aside, today the mountain rises in a spectacular skyline of crags that glow pink in the sunset and is part of MaChinchang Range which comprises the oldest rock formations in Malaysia Views are spectacular, offering a panorama over the landscape, the Andaman Sea, offshore islands and beyond to neighboring Thailand
Langkawi Geopark The MaChinchang mountain range is testimony to the oldest geology found in Malaysia It consists of 550 million year-old metamorphosed rock, around which a unique ecological habitat has developed over the centuries
Langkawi Geopark A cable car ride takes visitors to Langkawi’s second highest peak of mount MaChinchang where the view of surrounding islands is spectacular On clear days, visitors can also see parts of Thailand towards the north and Indonesia towards the south-west
Langkawi Geopark The cable car ride up the hill takes about 15 minutes and is highly exhilarating There are great views of the hillside flora, several waterfalls and an occasional glimpse of the wildlife and spectacular birds
Suspended Pedestrian Bridge Completed in 2004, this suspended pedestrian bridge is located in Langkawi Island, atop the MaChinchang mountain and forms part of the Gunung MaChinchang Geo-eco Tourism Park master plan
Suspended Pedestrian Bridge Suspended from a record-breaking 82m high single pylon, the curved bridge intersects a dramatic geological chasm up to 100m above ground, swinging out over the landscape to give visitors a unique spatial experience, and to bring them into otherwise unattainable locations, above virgin jungle with spectacular views
Suspended Pedestrian Bridge Notably, in contrast to a straight bridge, where the end is always monotonously in sight, a curved bridge offers spectacularly changing perspectives that reinvent themselves, as one proceeds along it
Suspended Pedestrian Bridge Measuring 125m in length, this structure ranks among the world’s longest curved pedestrian bridges and constructing it was no easy feat as the solution had to amalgamate the following critical elements: structural balancing from a single point (top of the pylon), optimal weight management and load distribution, pre-fabrication of bridge and onsite installation
Suspended Pedestrian Bridge The entire bridge, in all its elements had to be lifted to the mountain by helicopter and was subsequently assembled to its position
Activity Corner Deer farm At the deer farm you don’t just look at the deer, you walk among them, you touch them, and you let them at right from your hands Archery Test your skills on the archery
