Farms for AONBees launched from NERC Innovation Internship project
Lead into BEE-STEWARD project May 2017-2018
Cornwall AONB and South Devon AONB have collaborated with key partners in food and farming across the SW on our Farms for AONBees project.
The key aim of Farms for AONBees is to
enhance pollinators and pollination across our most outstanding landscapes by finding management solutions that benefit bees and business.
To increase understanding of how different land management options impact bee populations
The key outcome of Farms for AONBees is that we have piloted cutting-edge tools to aid the targeting of natural capital based farm management. This is a project which uses the latest technology and demonstrates how agri tech and research can play a critical role in shaping a sustainable future for agriculture.
Sharing
The key to this project is in the strong partnership that we have fostered and developed with key partners- ESI, National Farmers Union, Natural England.
As well as close collaboration with our farmers, FWAG, Cornwall Council, the National Trust.

Inspiring
At the heart of Farms for AONBees are bee computer models developed by our partners at the University of Exeter which can predict the effect of different land management and cropping patterns on pollinator numbers and survival. Effectively acting as a “virtual safe- space” to test out conservation options.
These bee models have won Innovator of the year 2017 BBSRC.
We have been trail-blazers- our AONBs are the first implement this research and we have played a vital part in its practical development.
Although Farms for AONBees is based on bees, it can be used as a biodiversity natural capital proxy, essential for successful delivery on the 25 year plan.

Learning
It is essential to have strong partnership working; we have a network of Farms for AONBees partners and champions.
Farms for AONBees has looked to balancing economic, social and environmental needs- bees and business.
We are proactive- AONBs need to pioneer new tool and techniques for natural capital approaches to land management so we can be the fore-runners under a new Environment Scheme.
Our work is being developed further through collaborations with large land owners e.g. Duchy of Cornwall, Clinton Devon Estates, with Natural England and with key businesses in the SW e.g. Trewithen dairy.
The biggest impact of Farms for AONBees is still to come- Farms for AONBees provides a template for successful landscape-scale partnership working that we can use across our AONB family and we have ambition to grow Farms for AONBees across the SW and beyond.
