Social bookmarking
 Social bookmarking is a method for Internet
users to store, organize, search, and manage
bookmarks of web pages on the Internet with
the help of metadata, typically in the form of
     tags that collectively and/or collaboratively
     become a folksonomy.
 In a social bookmarking system, bookmarks
are usually public, and can be saved privately,
shared only with specified people or groups,
shared only inside certain networks, or another
combination of public and private domains.

                                                       1
Folksonomy and tagging
 A folksonomy (derived from "folk" and
"taxonomy") refers to a form of organic
categorization derived from the practice and
     method of collaboratively creating and
managing tags to annotate and categorize
content . It is also known as collaborative
     tagging, social classification, social indexing
     and social tagging.
 Let’s see how social bookmarking works at
     http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HeBmvDpVbWc&
     .

                                               2
Social bookmarking - Delicious

 Makes it easy to have a single set of
bookmarks kept in sync between all of
   your computers
 Send your friends interesting bookmarks
that they can check out the next time
   they log on to Delicious
 See what's hot with Delicious users by
   checking out our popular tags

                                             3
Using Delicious
 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tcgloI3Zw4Y
offers a tutorial on a previous version of
Delicious. Note that the new version appears to
replace certain functions in the previous version,
like “network” by “follow”, “tag bundle” by “stack”
(which in fact results in a lot of user complaints).
 Your Delicious bookmarks can either be private
    or public.
 Read and learn other useful Delicious functions
    from http://delicious.com/help.

                                                           4
Social bookmarking in Delicious
 Examine the popularity of a web site that
you had listed and examine those who
have tagged that resource in order to
find other resources tagged by them
 Look for any relevant tags used by other
people which you may have missed out
     in your bookmarks.
 “Follow” people so that you can access of
any public bookmarks created by them
     (under the “Feed” tab).

                                                 5
Exercises
 Create a Delicious account if you don’t have
     one.
 Bookmark a few online resources that are
relevant to your interests on Delicious.
 Edit one of the online resource’s property to
     make it a private resource.
 Check on those people who also bookmark
your online resources. “Follow” those people
who share a similar interest with you so that
their public bookmarks can be seem under the
“Feed” tab of your Delicious account.
                                                     6
Teaching ideas
 Groups of students doing a classroom project
sharing their bookmarks either sharing one
Delicious account or “follow” one another
 Teachers may share teaching resources in a
     similar way
 Teachers may rate and review bookmarks to
help with students decide on usefulness of
     resources
 Examine the popularity of an online resource
that a student had listed and examine those
who have tagged that resource in order to find
possibly useful resources bookmarked by them

                                                      7
Challenges to tagging

  Misspelling of tags
 Similar resources can’t be related due
to the use of different tag names
  Tags of similar meaning
 E.g. fire truck vs. fire engine
 Different perceptions of the material
     to be tagged

                                                  8
Slide sharing
 Some slide sharing sites also support the
     notion of social bookmarking, e.g.
 Slideshare (which offers a slidecasting function, i.e.
autoplay slide show with a synchronized sound
         track; see
         http://blog.slideshare.net/2009/07/21/excellent-video-tutor
          for details)
 Learn Slideshare’s functions, in particular, the
     social bookmarking features at
     http://www.slideshare.net/tour

                                                              9
Social bookmarking - Connotea
 Connotea is a free online reference management
service for scientists, researchers, and clinicians by
which users may bookmark any web page they choose.
 Connotea was originally designed for scientists (but has
     rapidly grown throughout academic disciplines).
 Connotea recognizes a number of scientific websites
and will automatically collect metadata for the article or
page being bookmarked, including author and
     publication names.

                                                             10
Tutorials on Connotea

  http://www.connotea.org/guide offers a
few video tutorials on getting started with
Connotea. The page describes a list of
   Connotea functions too.
 Your Connotea bookmarks can either be
private, public or group based. They can
   be exported in several electronic
   bibliographic formats.

                                             11
Individual task (5%)
  Compare the social bookmarking
     features of Delicious, Slideshare, and
     Connotea and discuss their strengths
     and weaknesses. Summarise your
findings (preferably in form of a table) in
no more than 2 pages) and post them to
the relevant discussion forum on Moodle
by the end of this Sunday (25 March,
     2012).

                                                   12
