Clinic for Compulsive Hoarders
Compulsive hoarders live in terrible conditions. These are
people who have lost their homes and lives to hoarding. I
want hoarders up and down the country to realize that they
are not alone. Hoarding disorder has been recognised as dis-
tinct psychological condition since 2013. Despite the official
recognition, hoarders are still living with the shame and
secrecy of hoarding. According to the Institute of Psychiatry,
up to three million people are suffering. It is approximately
one in 20 people in the United Kingdom a hoarders, and there
are only few places that they can turn for help.
There is 87 years old Olive who has lives in the three bed-
room semi-detached council house in Brighton since 1933.
Her home is so full that she is forced to spend most of her day
outside. The inside of her house is full to the brim with thou-
sands of plastic bags, old furniture, and clothes. And she
thinks that she doesn’t hoard, she just keep stuff which will
be used again. She cannot cook or use the bathroom home,
so she gets her meals from the Community Centre where she
also washes. She has never married nor had children, so she
has no family to support her. She doesn’t want to show her
place to anybody. She has lived in this house virtually all of
her life, but now she is unable to access most of the rooms
due to her hoarding. Each night she climbs the pile of her
hoarding to get to bed. She has recycled since the war and has
been in conflict with the authorities on it for decades. Her
constant recycling is distracting her from clearing. The vast
amount of recycling to sort through is mostly tins and pack-
aging that she picks up from the street. Even she is doing recy-
cling, she still want to keep, and it is the problem. With this
problem, she is having depression and she wants some help
now.

STOUR SPACE / 7 Roach Road, Hackney Wick, London, E3 2PA
SITE
Hackney Wick used to be
an industrial hub which
leds to heavy pollution.
The street was in a mess,
and the buildings were old.
However, factories moved
to another town and it
became clean and attrac-
tive area. The buildings are
coverd in beautiful graffiti
by artists, and there are a
lot art studios.
Stour Space is located in
Hackney Wick, next to the
olympic park. As Hackney
Wick became clean and
beautiful area, the hoard-
ers will escape from the
mess in their house by
hoarding treatment.
CONCEPT MODEL
When there are a straight narrow corridor and people passing, people nomally feel uncomfortable to stop in the middle of the way. The reason is
because there is not enough space. Therefore, by adding gap spaces in the rectillnear corridor, users can stay in that space.
The exhibition space in this project will apply these facts, so the public people pass through the corridor and they can go to the gap space when they
want to stay more time for the exhibition.

My daughter keep saying that i have a problem with full of items at home. I don’t
think i am a hoarder, I will prove that I am not a hoarder with a doctor here.
These people have the same habit as me, and they are haveing hoarding treatment.
I am confused.. I maybe a hoarder.

BACKGROUND
Urban Housing Problem
Our lifestyles changes according to the time. Traditional extended families have been
superceded by nuclear families. Moreover, the divorce rate has also climbed, and single
households have been increased. House prices have been perked up rapidly in the last few
years.
We need a solution to overcome these difficult situations. I believe that modular type of
houses will decrease house prices and flexible housing system will give us better life.
Flexible Housing system according to various lifestyles
21c Housing system needs to present many different modular unit house according to various
lifestyles. If there is a man who is single, he can start with small unit house and when he get married,
he can put more units to extend the space. If he gets new hobby or job, he can add a theater unit or
a library unit. Therefore, he doesn’t need to move to a new residence, just add more units or change
them to others.

THEME
The fetuses are covered by a thin membrane that is called aminion. There
is water in the aminion that a fetuse is grown in. While a fetus is develop-
ing, the ridges along these patterns are influenced by a number of factors,
including bone growth, pressures within the womb and contact with
amniotic fluid.
The amniotic fluid absorb shock a fetuse from external impact, and it
protect from microbism. It helps to adjust fetuse’s temperature as well.

BIKE STATION
Seoul Institute of the Arts (Semester2) _ December 2011
New Concept of Bike Convenience Center
BACKGROUND
Environmental problems are caused by car is in
serious condition. And the cars which use of
alternative energy are being developed to solve
the underlying problem. But it is not enough yet.
In addition, the lack of space is serious problem.
Seoul has been being concerned of increased
densely populated, and it makes huge traffic
jam.
Bicycle was the best transportation until the
early 1970s. It has a big merit that it doesn’t
make environmental pollution. The bike is
being receiving attention to be the future trans-
port.
The reasons that Seoul citizens do bicycling are
activities and transportation. The reasons that not do
bicycling is inconvenient and dangerous.
However, they are very positive to use activation of
bicycle.
New Concept Bike Station
For revitalization of riding a bicycle, I suggest a new concept building for bicycle riders. By creating bike convenience
building, people can use bicycle more safely, more conveniently. And it would make vitalization of using bicycle. So
I suggest new concept of bike station for emerging bicycle culture in our lives. People will consume, spend time, and
communicate with other riders. I suggest the interior space for riders to enjoy riding regardless of seasons and climate.
The building need to be in the middle of the city, so anybody can join.
The Mayor of Seoul have made a lot effort people to
use bicycle for transportation or sport. However,
people still don’t use bicycle. As you see the diagram,
bicycle is 2.2%. It is still so low, we can compare with
other countries that there are 6~7%. We need to
realize the present to solove this problem, and make
the plan for awareness of bike culture.

  • 20. Compulsive hoarders live in terrible conditions. These are people who have lost their homes and lives to hoarding. I want hoarders up and down the country to realize that they are not alone. Hoarding disorder has been recognised as dis- tinct psychological condition since 2013. Despite the official recognition, hoarders are still living with the shame and secrecy of hoarding. According to the Institute of Psychiatry, up to three million people are suffering. It is approximately one in 20 people in the United Kingdom a hoarders, and there are only few places that they can turn for help. There is 87 years old Olive who has lives in the three bed- room semi-detached council house in Brighton since 1933. Her home is so full that she is forced to spend most of her day outside. The inside of her house is full to the brim with thou- sands of plastic bags, old furniture, and clothes. And she thinks that she doesn’t hoard, she just keep stuff which will be used again. She cannot cook or use the bathroom home, so she gets her meals from the Community Centre where she also washes. She has never married nor had children, so she has no family to support her. She doesn’t want to show her place to anybody. She has lived in this house virtually all of her life, but now she is unable to access most of the rooms due to her hoarding. Each night she climbs the pile of her hoarding to get to bed. She has recycled since the war and has been in conflict with the authorities on it for decades. Her constant recycling is distracting her from clearing. The vast amount of recycling to sort through is mostly tins and pack- aging that she picks up from the street. Even she is doing recy- cling, she still want to keep, and it is the problem. With this problem, she is having depression and she wants some help now. PROLOGUE 1 9 l

  • 22. CONCEPT MODEL When there are a straight narrow corridor and people passing, people nomally feel uncomfortable to stop in the middle of the way. The reason is because there is not enough space. Therefore, by adding gap spaces in the rectillnear corridor, users can stay in that space. The exhibition space in this project will apply these facts, so the public people pass through the corridor and they can go to the gap space when they want to stay more time for the exhibition. 2 1 l

While a fetus is develop- ing, the ridges along these patterns are influenced by a number of factors, including bone growth, pressures within the womb and contact with amniotic fluid. The amniotic fluid absorb shock a fetuse from external impact, and it protect from microbism. It helps to adjust fetuse’s temperature as well. Third Maternity ProtectionThird Maternity Protection [Processes define the function] Belly Amniotic fluid Umbilical cord Pregnant’s comunication with a fetuse Pregnant’s active way to protect Pregnant’s floating way to protect Primary Secondary Tertiary Communicational protection Active protection Floating protection [ Secondary and tertiary are necessary ] It accepts shaking of primary earthquake actively, not exclusively. So it is in harmony with nature, and it takes flexible defensive condition for secondary flooding. Therefore, it can be motion architecture. And it also communicates with human by exterior and interior, so the exterior is in harmony with the interior. And it became new concept of Neo Noah’s Ark. SELF ACCEPTION l 5 4
  • 56. DESIGN CONCEPT Starting Point The cracking shape chop at circle. Shape Uniformly makes dynamic shape by cracking accumultaion. Design Process Design Process Earthquake is shaking of the ground caused by movement of the earth’s crust. The gap which is after land cracked is covered with something differ- ent component. Therefore, crack is connecting link between these two unlike component things. As the crack became a frame, and imprint the frame on circle shaped thing. It shows a pile of dynamic crack, so it generates a new form of design. EARTHQUAKE CRACK The process of cracking = Dynamic The process of accumulation = Uniformly 5 5 l

  • 66. BACKGROUND Environmental problems are caused by car is in serious condition. And the cars which use of alternative energy are being developed to solve the underlying problem. But it is not enough yet. In addition, the lack of space is serious problem. Seoul has been being concerned of increased densely populated, and it makes huge traffic jam. Bicycle was the best transportation until the early 1970s. It has a big merit that it doesn’t make environmental pollution. The bike is being receiving attention to be the future trans- port. The reasons that Seoul citizens do bicycling are activities and transportation. The reasons that not do bicycling is inconvenient and dangerous. However, they are very positive to use activation of bicycle. New Concept Bike Station For revitalization of riding a bicycle, I suggest a new concept building for bicycle riders. By creating bike convenience building, people can use bicycle more safely, more conveniently. And it would make vitalization of using bicycle. So I suggest new concept of bike station for emerging bicycle culture in our lives. People will consume, spend time, and communicate with other riders. I suggest the interior space for riders to enjoy riding regardless of seasons and climate. The building need to be in the middle of the city, so anybody can join. The Mayor of Seoul have made a lot effort people to use bicycle for transportation or sport. However, people still don’t use bicycle. As you see the diagram, bicycle is 2.2%. It is still so low, we can compare with other countries that there are 6~7%. We need to realize the present to solove this problem, and make the plan for awareness of bike culture. Study the range of rotation curve. TEST RESULT Comparison of riding bicycle or not IDEAL ANGLE OF GRADIENT MINIMUM TURN ANGLE Need a prop for feet when it stop According to the motional characteristic of bicycle, it is designed as rotational space, and ramp type of structure. Need a long ramp type structure By lamp type space of the exist- ing building facilities and other features are naturally formed into the level difference. There are a lot inclined plan, so make some rest area between each floor for users. The architecture needs to be divided for long ramp type plan. The ramp would be connection between buildings. 3~5cm Handle position l 6 6

DESIGN CONCEPT FRAME Internal Frame Structure External Frame Structure Angle Study Angle Study [ floor ] [ floor ] By using frame structure, it diffuses the force in the angle and direction, so it maintains the balance. Application of the frame angle It keeps the building’s balance by using the angle of the main frame. The angle of the force is diffused. The main frame duffuse the force to sub frame. 6 7 l

So the facility doesn’t need big space to build. Bike Bench Riders can put their bike on this facil- ity, and the other side they can sit. And they can touch the wheel of their bike, so this bench can make disapper the psychological burden of riders. Considered of human’s view sight The view sight of riders rise up from the ground. So the show case started from the ground and it is designed by the angle of human’s view sight. l 6 8
