1. Redbridge
Client Information
The London Borough of Redbridge is a Borough based in North-East London. Over the years,
Redbridge is known for their award-winning parks as well as open spaces. There are about
35 parks and playgrounds to enjoy including forests such as Hainault with 300 acres of
countryside with play areas, cafes and a petting zoo. Fairlop Waters is one of the most
famous sites which offers a range of activities to do both on and off water. They have great
transport links such as the bus transport system and have excellent shopping areas for the
public to enjoy. The local schools of Redbridge are also known for their high performance in
academics with great results within GCSE’s and A Levels.
The beauty of the Borough is that one quarter of the whole area is made up and covered by
forests and green space while three quarters is made up by constructive development such
as homes. Valentines Mansion is one of the elite and historic area in Redbridge which is
right next to Valentines Park. The Valentine Mansion is a Georgian country house that is a
300 year old restored building that attract thousands of visitors a year. The administrative
headquarters is at Redbridge Town Hall in Ilford and its local authority is Redbridge London
Borough Council.
Redbridge London Borough Council is the local authority for Redbridge in Greater London,
England, and one of the capital's 32 borough councils. It is divided into 21 wards and 63
councillors are elected. The Redbridge Council comprises 35 Labour Party members, 25
Conservative Party members and three Liberal Democrat members. The council is now run
by the Labour Party itself. The London Government Act in 1963 created the council and
replaced four local authorities: Ilford, Wanstead and Woodford Borough Council with some
part of Chigwell and Dagenham. The current local authority was first elected in 1964, a year
before formally coming into its powers and prior to the creation of the London Borough of
Redbridge on 1 April 1965. Labour won the May 2014 elections and the Mayor of the
Redbridge Borough is Linda Huggett who was selected at the Annual Council meeting on
Thursday 11 May 2017.
One of the main purposes of these local councils are responsible for tasks and services such
as cleaning waste around the Borough. This may include collecting waste disposal such as
rubbish from houses, recycling and even street cleaning. The councillors are responsible for
also making decisions on behalf of the local community which are designed to be best suited
for the community.
2. Structureof Brief
Our client, who are the Council of the London Borough of Redbridge, have created an
informal agreement which means those people who want to create a documentary are not
obligated to do, nor do they have to participate in the making and are even not under a
contract if taking part. Due to this agreement we have control over what we want to do with
the project as there are no contract guideline we have to follow and also what topics we
would want to base the project about (drug abuse, crime, littering, etc.) and we gain
creative control such as how we do it. For example, if we want to do interviews formally
with strangers or ask snappy questions from others.
The brief mentions there will also be competition amongst everyone who chooses to take
part in their own projects. The best project will be aired on television in the local areas
within the Redbridge region. This was good idea to do as people especially the youth are
always motivated when it comes to competitions and always work hard.
While people take part in competitions, this gives the client a wide option of projects they
find is the best amongst other competitors that suit them the most. Competitions are by far
amazing for the young school children to take part in. This is because it gives those skills and
an experienced mind-set for their life ahead. The older they get, the more competitions are
given to them by life by competing against other people. For example, when they apply to
university and try to make space for themselves, when applying for a job against other
applicants or an apprenticeship, etc.
Purposeof Project
Social Action projects are non-profitable projects that are done by free will which are
intended to benefit others such as the community. These projects are mainly to bring about
social change to people within a community who are not aware things such as crime, drug
abuse or even health problems within their area. These projects bring about positive change
and impact within the local community or area as people decide to act on it.
Another purpose you may say about social action projects is that they bring the community
together, united in order to fight against a common issue such as drug abuse causing
community cohesion. Surveillance is one of the many purposes in social action projects as
taken from the Blumler and Katz’s Uses and Gratifications Theory in 1974. Surveillance is
when you want to find out what problems are being faced by a specific regional area, nation
or elsewhere in the world.
In many places of the world, there are serious issues developing day by day which most
people either ignore or are too afraid to deal with them due to corrupt people in power.
However, there are some programmes that scout out these issues and try to resolve them.
They do this by gathering proof as most of the time people don’t have evidence to back
their statements. Panorama was brought to the public by the BBC which first aired in 1953.
This television programme was about issues and current affairs in the country. In November
2016, they had released a special episode called ‘Nursing Homes Undercover’ where hidden
3. cameras were installed in the nursing homes in order to record the truth about the staff
there and how rude they are. This tackled the issue of neglect and abuse in nursing homes
all over the UK. The caught footage had then been brought to attention of the public.
Opportunities Offered
At the same time of creating a social action project, every individual is able to learn and gain
new skills and knowledge that will benefit them in the future. They will not just have the
knowledge on the very area they are filming but will also gain skills when filming such as
leadership skills, communication, listening, etc. Creating a social action project challenges
you as well as gives a great sense of achievement to a person that looks great to apply onto
a CV. The reason this will look good on a CV is because it shows the employers that you are
able to take on a challenge and are potential of taking on other large projects and tasks. I
will be able to keep the project as part of my portfolio which I can be able to show off to get
into university as I will be a step ahead as I have acquired skills and techniques.
This social action project will help me develop my skills both communication and social. This
is because as well as having good communication and being comfortable with the cast and
crew that I know, I should also be doing well with strangers that I will have on my project
such as doing interviews. So in order to improve my skills I must talk with random stranger I
have never spoken to before in order to get a clear view and a variety of opinions. At the
same to I will also be gaining personal confidence rather than being nervous while talking to
strangers. Communication and confidence are a great combined skill to possess as it will
benefit you highly in life and will make you feel more comfortable around others. For
example, when you are working at an office with new colleagues or giving a presentation
with someone else.
Another great skill to acquire is to have a great body language. This is because while going
onto the street to ask people for their opinions and views you must be approachable. If you
stand up straight with a smile on your face, people would not be intimidated while you are
approaching them. However, if you are slouching and look miserable, people would not take
you seriously and will not provide proper and full information you are trying to receive.
I will also be gaining additional and beneficial skills such as organisation and time
management skills. This is very important because if you are not organised enough well your
project can be messed up and fall apart later during the pre or post production. Also time
management is very important as there will be a deadline I will have to meet in order to
4. submit my video. If you possess both skills you are more likely to be very professional and
this will want others to work with you again. You should be able to know how much time
you need to give to each stage. For example, time for research, filming and editing in order
for the whole project to run smoothly.
Filming techniques, editing styles, being able to use the microphones and also being able to
do research and write scripts would be further practical skills I will learn. Along with these
being able to work in a group I will gain team working skills. I have done previous projects
which is a music video which was 4 minutes long and a theatrical horror trailer which was 2
minutes long. However, this social action project will be even bigger as it is longer. Also I will
need to be doing using different techniques such as doing interviews, there will be different
editing techniques such as slow paced editing, doing narrations and even breaking the 4th
wall as I talk directly to the audience while looking at the camera.
Problem solving skills will be improved. This is as no matter how bad or good your
production is, you will overcome some obstacles along production and will be able to learn
from those mistakes next-time. For example, if you forgot to turn the microphone on or if
the weather is bad for filming, next time you will learn to check your microphones and will
be able to change location for filming due to bad weather or will check the weather reports
earlier. All this skills I will be learning will benefit me for life as I would like to do media as
my life career such as doing filmdirection. Also as it is a competition, I would like to think
outside the box and want to use a different creative method to get my message across to
the public as I want my production to be unique and to stand out from the others.
