Erin Gruwell had a class of "unteachable" students who hated school and each other. She gave them books they could relate to about Anne Frank and the Bosnian war, which helped the students connect. They began writing anonymous journals about their lives and challenges. These journals were later published as "The Freedom Writers Diary." The students, called the Freedom Writers, continue to mentor others and work to change education.
