Trajectory of Changein Upper Paleolithic Industries
and Distribution of Sites in Eastern Shizuoka.
NAKAMURA Yuuki
In the Eastern Shizuoka there are many Paleolithic sites, especially at the foot of Mt.Ashitaka and Hakone. This
paper describes chronological sequence of the above area’s Upper Paleolithic lithic industries and analyzes the Upper
Paleolithic occupation of this area based on site distribution pattern.
Even though it must be taken into account that landscape evolution and biased excavation areas have effect on dis-
tribution of sites revealed at the present, the result of analysis suggests as below: distribution of sites alternated expan-
sion with contraction correlated with average size of sites. It expanded during Black Band V, Black Band II and after
Sunagawa Phase, contracted during Black Band IV, Scoria Layer III and Nise Loam. Until the early part of Late Upper
Paleolithic, main occupational area were at Southeastern foot hills of Mt. Ashitaka, where sites distributed continually
during contraction of distribution. In the late part of Late Upper Paleolithic, main occupational area expanded gradually
around Mt. Ashitaka and Hakone, and ranged from low foothills to higher hills in the period of microblade industry oc-
cupational area.
