Emerging Mobile Trends & Behaviors for 2013Paul Booth
Globally, tablet sales are forecast to outstrip PC sales by 2016. While tablet customers share behaviors with PC users, there are differences across platforms that present opportunities for marketers. By 2013, over 50% of all emails are expected to be opened on mobile devices like phones and tablets, down from 36% in the first half of 2012. This poses challenges for marketers as email performs less well on these devices. Responsive design can optimize the email experience based on the device. Near field communication (NFC) is expected to enable more applications especially mobile payments, which could reach $100 billion by 2016. Mobile payments and digital wallets will continue gaining mainstream adoption through 2013 and beyond.

Designing High Performance ETL for Data WarehouseMarcel Franke
This document discusses best practices and approaches for designing high performance ETL for data warehousing. It summarizes the key components of the FastTrack reference architecture, including hardware configuration with storage, servers, and networking. It then evaluates different ETL loading strategies like loading into partitioned vs non-partitioned tables, with and without sorting, and using hash partitioning. Test results show that loading with multiple parallel streams into hash partitioned tables using partition switching can achieve the highest throughput.
Using information technology provides businesses with competitive advantages by increasing efficiencies and reducing costs. Businesses can use IT to store product information in databases, perform calculations in spreadsheets, create promotional materials with graphics software, and communicate internally. This allows businesses to operate globally 24/7. Advanced companies like NASA use specialized welding technologies provided by IT firms to build components for projects like the Mars Curiosity Rover mission, which aims to investigate the Martian environment for signs of past microbial life.
Create a Data Science Lab with Microsoft and Open Source toolsMarcel Franke
This document provides an overview of creating a data science lab using Microsoft and open source tools. It discusses what data science is, provides a brief history of its use in gambling and weather forecasting, and examines current applications in areas like social media, customer analysis, and predictive maintenance. The document advocates learning from nature by taking an evolutionary approach of variation and selection to complex problems. It then describes setting up an efficient lab for experimentation using tools like Power BI, SQL Server, and open source software R, and scaling solutions using technologies like Revolution Analytics, Hadoop, and cloud services.
This document discusses testing VoIP connections between different countries using the Visualware website. It describes testing the download speed from UAE to Duelles, which was 9.37mbp using HTTP. Graphs show how video quality and packet loss increase as jitter rises in tests from USA to Dulles. Additional tests discussed include routing tests between Germany and Leizpig, and checking accessible firewall ports. The conclusion states that Visualware allows testing connection quality for audio/video between countries and measuring jitter and packet loss. It also discusses testing routing, firewalls, VoIP, and video quality. The document provides instructions for installing Java plugins in the browser to use Visualware's testing features.
The document discusses big data, which refers to massive amounts of data from various sources that are difficult to analyze using traditional database tools. It defines big data and provides examples of types of data. It also discusses characteristics of big data like volume, variety, velocity, variability, and value. The document then discusses Apache Hadoop, a popular framework for storing and processing large datasets, and how big data is used in marketing for recommendation engines. Finally, it discusses how big data can provide value by making information more transparent and accessible.
The document describes an esoteric programming language called Emoticon that uses emoticon icons as code instructions. It provides the codes for several common emoticons like the smiling face, angry face, and heart. It also includes an example PHP program that takes user text input containing emoticons and replaces them with HTML codes to display the emoticon icons. The document recommends some jQuery and icon generator tools to work with emoticons and concludes with references on emoticons.
The document discusses the benefits of exercise for mental health. Regular physical activity can help reduce anxiety and depression and improve mood and cognitive functioning. Exercise causes chemical changes in the brain that may help protect against developing mental illness and improve symptoms for those who already suffer from conditions like anxiety and depression.
The document summarizes the evolution of housing from nomadic tribes to modern times. It discusses how housing changed as societies became more settled with the development of agriculture and animal domestication. It describes the transition from temporary shelters to planned towns and cities. It then outlines key changes in house design and living standards over time, from Roman homes to medieval structures to modern suburban developments. Housing trends like urbanization and challenges in India are also examined.

Early settlers like John Batman viewed the land as a resource to exploit for economic gain rather than something inhabited and valued by Indigenous groups. His purchase of land from the Wurundjeri people established a precedent of terra nullius that paved the way for further settlement and industrialization. Industrialization depended on abundant, cheap resources and led to massive environmental impacts as settlers overharvested seals, whales, trees and grazed livestock unsustainably, driving many species to extinction locally and changing ecosystems irreparably.
Big History examines history on a large scale across long time periods and focuses on major themes and adaptations in human experience rather than isolated events. The documentary series "The Day the Universe Changed" used this approach of studying big picture themes and ideas to understand how human views have developed over time. Geneticist Spencer Wells' book and documentary "The Journey of Man" traced early human migrations out of Africa using genetic data and concluded that all modern humans evolved from a common ancestor in Africa. A major volcanic eruption in 535 AD caused global climate change, famine, and plague in a catastrophe that was only later understood through scientific evidence like tree rings.

National Digital Forum [[edit]] this museum wittylama
This document summarizes similarities and differences between Wikipedia and museums. It notes that both institutions curate and contextualize information, and both are learning how to share resources with others. However, American cultural institutions tend to have more open policies around high-resolution images and reuse, while Australian institutions typically only allow personal or private use of lower quality images. Overall, the document explores how Wikipedia and museums, while different, both aim to educate through openly sharing knowledge and information.
Cave pollution occurs when harmful substances are introduced into cave environments. Caves naturally purify water but are threatened by various types of pollution including oils, trash, sewage, and industrial/agricultural waste. Over 7,500 species of troglobites that live exclusively in caves are defenseless against invasive species and pollution. Pollution enters caves through dumping, poor farming practices, and by people tracking materials inside. It contaminates groundwater and destroys fragile cave ecosystems and habitats. Efforts are needed to properly treat water, reduce waste, and encourage responsible caving to help protect these vulnerable underground environments.
G0321 lecture 9 science and technology meets arts and humanitiesKelvin Ooi
This document discusses the relationships between science, technology, and the arts/humanities. It begins by defining arts and humanities as exploring imagined worlds created by different minds that allow us to understand other perspectives and give context to think about life. The document then discusses how science and technology are sometimes inspired by nature, providing examples like Velcro being inspired by burrs and bullet trains being inspired by kingfishers. It also discusses how the human mind is complex and creative, as opposed to machines, and how fields like mathematics, physics, and psychology relate to ideas of beauty, everything, and the mind-body problem. The document ends by discussing how science fiction imagines future technologies and societies involving areas like space, aliens, and

The pixie's parasol (Mycena interrupta) is a small detritivorous
mushroom with a Gondwanan distribution pattern, being found
in Australia, New Zealand, New Caledonia and Chile. It grows
up to about 2 cm (1 in) in height, with the blue cap also growing
up to 2 cm in diameter. It appears in small colonies on rotting,
moist wood in rainforests and beech or eucalypt forests.
