Abstinence-only sexual education programs teach false and misleading facts, such as HIV being spread through sweat and tears or touching genitals leading to pregnancy. Over $1.5 billion has been spent on these programs since 1996 despite 87% of schools teaching abstinence as the most effective contraception. Advocates support more comprehensive sex education programs, parents and doctors speaking factually to teens about sex, and teens sharing accurate information with each other to empower prevention.
