4. Introduction
Bangladesh is a small country with many historical sites and resources. It is very
important to know about these blessings. For this reason NAEM has included
“Know Bangladesh” program in its training schedule. Consequently we visited
Chittagong District for implementing “Know Bangladesh” program from 18
March to 22 March, 2018. We visited a number of places to know about the
historical, archaeological background and resources. Furthermore Know
Bangladesh research has its greater scope to learn the socio-economic
condition of Bangladesh including its natural resources, past and present
history; and also agriculture, commerce etc. as well.
5. Background of the Program:
• According to know the inner-beauty of our motherland, villages
should be visited and all the significant spot or establishment and the
philosophies of the people of different region must be observed or
analyzed which make this program include in the training module as
know Bangladesh program.
6. Objectives of the Program:
• Know Bangladesh program for the participant of the foundation
training course for BCS(General and technical) education cadre
officers has some specific objectives. The major objectives are as
follows:
• To gather specific knowledge about the places of historical and
archaeological interest.
• To acquaint with the socio-economic condition of rural Bangladesh.
• To know about natural resources
• To know development condition and government initiatives
• To know cultural variety
8. About Chittagong
• Chittagong District located in the south-eastern region of Bangladesh
with an area of 5282.98 sq km, is bounded by FENI district and Tripura
(Indian state) on the north, COX'S BAZAR district on the south,
BANDARBAN, RANGAMATI and KHAGRACHHARI districts on the east and
NOAKHALI district and the BAY OF BENGAL on the west. Chittagong District
is quite different from other districts for its unique natural beauty
characterised by hills, rivers, sea, forests and valleys. Annual average
temperature maximum 32.5°C, minimum 13.5°C, total annual rainfall
2687 mm. Main rivers are KARNAFULI, HALDA and SANGU.

11. Then our journey to know Bangladesh Starts
with visiting Boat Club at Karnafuly River
12. Historical events
• Chittagong had been a sea port since the ancient time. The Arab traders had
business transactions with this port since 9th century AD. Chittagong region was
under the kingdom of Arakan during sixth and seventh centuries. Before the
Muslim rule Chittagong had been either under the control of the Arakans or
under the kings of Burma. Sultan Fakruddin Mubarak Shah of Sonargaon
conquered Chittagong in 1340. After the defeat of Sultan Giasuddin Mahmud
Shah in the hands of Sher Shah in1538, the Arakanise again captured Chittagong.
From this time onward until its conquest by the Mughals this region was under
the control of the Portuguese and the Magh pirates. The Mughal Commandar
Bujurg Umed Khan expelled the Portuguese from the area in 1666 and
established Mughal rule there. The Mughals renamed Chittagong as Islamabad.
• On 18th April 1930, the revolutionaries looted the Chittagong armoury under the
leadership of Mastarda Surya Sen. During this time the leaders of the women
revolutionaries were Pritilata Waddedar, Bina Das, Lila Ray, Kalpana Dutta etc.
The Declaration of Independence of Bangladesh was announced from Swadhin
Bangla Betar Kendra located at Kalurghat.

15. Foy’s Lake
• This beautiful lake surrounded with lovely hills is situated just east of
the Pahartali Railway Station and West of the Khulshi residential area.
This lake attracts thousands of visitors almost each day. There are
small bushy hills around the green water of the lake. This beautiful
artificial lake was created in 1942 by the Bengal Railways Engineer Mr.
Foy for providing drinking water.

29. Conclusion
Traveling is a magical source to acquire knowledge, to broaden our
minds, to enrich our views and to open our eyes to see what we usually
failed to see. Thanks NAEM for arranging this opportunities for us to
visit one of the important parts of Bangladesh. This program increased
our eagerness to know about all parts of Bangladesh. All of you are
welcome to visit our Chittagong District, the commercial capital of
Bangladesh.
