"The goal of education is not to
increase the amount of knowledge
but to create the possibilities for a
child to invent and discover, to
create men who are capable of
doing new things.“ – Jean Piaget
Motivation is the driving force that causes a
student to take action
Engagement is the observable behavior or
evidence of that motivation.
Recognizing students’ unique qualities and special talents, getting to know
what interests students and incorporating these interests into lessons or
assignments, and reaching out to parents with a note or email when a student
does something well are all strategies that is use to make learning personal
and increase relatedness in the classroom.
- The classroom is a dynamic environment, and student needs may
change over time. Teachers who understand their learners can adapt
their teaching methods and materials to address emerging challenges
or capitalize on opportunities for deeper understanding..
- Developing positive teacher-student relationships is
essential for creating a supportive learning environment.
Understanding learners on a personal level fosters trust,
communication, and a sense of community, which can
positively impact students' emotional well-being and
academic success.
- Students come from diverse cultural backgrounds,
and understanding these backgrounds helps
teachers create an inclusive and culturally sensitive
learning environment. This awareness promotes
mutual respect among students and facilitates a
more harmonious classroom atmosphere.
- Knowing how students process information,
communicate, and express themselves enables
teachers to choose communication strategies that
resonate with each learner. This, in turn,
enhances comprehension and reduces
misunderstandings.
- Understanding learners allows teachers to identify
potential learning challenges early on. By recognizing
individual strengths and weaknesses, educators can provide
timely interventions, accommodations, or additional support
to help students overcome obstacles and succeed
academically.
- Learner profiling involves gathering and analyzing
information about individual students to better
understand their learning preferences, needs, strengths,
and weaknesses. By creating detailed learner profiles,
educators can modify their teaching strategies to meet
the diverse requirements of their students.
1. Surveys and Questionnaires
•Interest Surveys: Collect information about students'
hobbies, interests, and preferences related to subjects
or activities.
•Learning Style Inventories: Use assessments to
identify whether students are visual, auditory,
kinesthetic, or read/write learners.
•Goal Setting Surveys: Understand students' short-
term and long-term academic and personal goals
2. Observation and Informal Assessment
•Classroom Observation: Pay attention to
students' behavior, engagement levels, and
interactions within the classroom.
•Informal Conversations: Engage in casual
discussions with students to learn more about their
experiences, challenges, and interests.
3. Learning Analytics and Educational Technology
•Data from Educational Apps: Analyze data
generated by educational technology tools to identify
patterns in student performance and engagement.
•Learning Management Systems (LMS): Utilize
LMS data to track students' progress, participation,
and completion of assignments.
4. Formative Assessments
•Pre-assessments: Administer assessments before a unit to gauge students'
prior knowledge and identify areas of strength or weakness.
•Quick Quizzes and Exit Tickets: Use short assessments to gather real-time
feedback on students' understanding and identify areas that need reinforcement.
 Enables the teachers to focus and customize their teaching plans.
 Address knowledge gaps and misconceptions.
 Become mindful of the diverse backgrounds in your classroom.
 Build a bridge between students' prior knowledge and new information.
•Examples of pre-assessment tools.
• Pre-class questionnaires.
• Quizzes.
• Diagnostic test - is the test to know the strength, weaknesses,
knowledge, and skill of a student prior to the instructions
• Achievement test vs Aptitude test
5. Portfolios and Student Work
•Portfolio Assessment: Review students' portfolios to gain insights into their
progression, achievements, and areas for improvement.
•Analysis of Assignments: Examine students' completed assignments to
understand their thought processes and grasp of the material.
6. Collaboration and Parent Involvement
•Parent-Teacher Conferences: Engage with parents to gather insights into
students' learning habits, study environments, and interests outside of school.
•Collaboration with Specialized Services: Work with counselors, special
education professionals, or other specialists to gain a comprehensive
understanding of individual students.
7. Cultural Awareness and Diversity
•Cultural Background Surveys: Collect information about students'
cultural backgrounds, languages spoken at home, and traditions.
•Inclusive Curriculum Design: Ensure that the curriculum reflects
diverse perspectives and experiences to accommodate varied cultural
backgrounds
Components of Learner's Profiling
1.Academic Performance
2.Learning Styles
3.Interests and Hobbies
4.Cognitive Abilities
5.Social and Emotional Well-being
6.Career Aspirations
7.Behavioral Patterns
8.Individualized Education Plans (IEPs)
9.Progress Monitoring
•Analyzing academic performance is foundational
to learner's profiling.
•It empowers educators to tailor instruction,
address individual needs, and support student
success.
Knowing a student's hobbies and extracurricular activities
allows educators to include relevant examples and real-
world applications into lessons, making the subject more
engaging and relatable.
•Understanding cognitive strengths and weaknesses.
•Adapting teaching materials to cognitive levels.
•Assessing cognitive capacities enables teachers to
modify the complexity and depth of the subject so that it is
appropriate for the students' intellectual capabilities.
- Consideration of a student's social and emotional
status is critical for developing a helpful and positive
learning environment. Identifying any issues or
concerns allows educators to provide relevant
resources and assistance.
A student's future plans might be influenced by the
courses, electives, and extracurricular activities they
choose if their career objectives and aspirations are
known.
Monitoring student conduct and involvement in
the classroom can assist pinpoint problem areas
or possible remedial measures to encourage good
behavior.
Learner's profile incorporates data from Individualized
Education Plans for kids with exceptional needs. This
ensures that teachers are observant of the particular
adjustments and accommodations required to assist these
pupils.
Regularly assessing a student's progress and
adapting instructional strategies based on their
evolving needs ensures continuous improvement
and personalized support.
