As one would expect of the world’s largest and most unique bird, the ostrich trails a colourful
and fascinating history reaching right back to antiquity. This family of running birds, known
as Ratites or Struthio Camelus differs from all other types of birds. They do not use their
wings for flight or for movement through water.
Although they are now concentrated in the Southern hemisphere, naturalists and travellers
of old prove that the geographical range of the ostrich was far wider in the past. Fossil re-
mains have been found in north-west India, and at one time they thrived in great numbers
throughout southern Morocco, Algeria, Egypt, Arabia, Syria and in Mesopotamia. Thus, the
ostrich somehow embodies the Soul of Travel and Exoticism.

Ostrich, pharaonic symbol
of Justice
In Ancient Egypt, the ostrich feather em-
bodied the symbols of Justice, Equality and
Truth. The symbolism stems from the os-
trich feather being the only plume to have
barbs of equal length on either side of the
central shaft.
The ostrich feather was used in the head
adornment of Goddess Maât. She was
the Goddess of Justice and Truth, and was
charged with weighing Souls on the scales
of Judgement. Thus the ostrich feather, as its
Goddess’ emblem, represented the universal
order of Justice.
The Ostrich Feather really symbolised the
heart of the Pharaohs and dignitaries func-
tion: to enforce justice.
Since the dawn of time connotations of in-
tegrity and moral justice have been intimately
associated with this noble bird...

Dans l’ Egypte Antique, la plume d’autruche
était un symbole de justice, d’équité et de
vérité. Les Anciens voyaient l’origine de cette

déesse Maât, déesse de justice et de vérité qui

Maat, Dea della Giustizia e della Verità, che
presidiava la pesa dell’anima nella bilancia del
giudizio. La piuma di struzzo, emblema della
Dea della Giustizia, rappresenta dunque l’or-
dine universale basato sulla giustizia.
E per questo le piume di struzzo con cui erano
confezionati gli scettri-scacciamosche di Fara-
oni e dignitari simbolizzano il cuore della loro
funzione: fare rispettare la giustizia.
La pompa papale ha conservato questa remi-
niscenza faraonica nei suoi attributi. Una con-
notazione di integrità e di elevatura morale
che si associa intimamente allo struzzo, fin dal-
la notte dei tempi.

The establishment of the KLEIN KAROO Group in South Africa began with the Klein Karoo
agricultural Co-operative being founded in 1945 by producers of this region. Organised Ostrich
farming was established around 1864 in the scenic Klein Karoo Valley lying nestled between the
Outeniqua and Swartberg mountain ranges.
The fluffy, dramatic and colourful ostrich feather plumes became the fourth export earner for
South Africa after gold, diamonds and wool at the time international demand peaked in 1913, and
Oudtshoorns’ bounty grew internationally.

1826 The first ostrich feathers are harvested from wild ostriches
1863 Oudtshoorn is officially declared a town on august 26th
1905 The Cape Colony’s domesticated ostrich numbers are calculated at 360 830
1926 The Co-operative Agricultural company is established on February 27th
1945 KLEIN KAROO Agricultural Co-operative is formed to protect the interests of its members
1958 Single Channel Marketing is adopted by the ostrich industry

L’établissement du Groupe KLEIN KAROO en Afrique du Sud a débuté avec la création de la Coopérative agricole Klein
Karoo fondée en 1945 par les producteurs de cette région. L’élevage d’autruche a été organisé autour de 1864 dans la splen-
dide Vallée du Klein Karoo, blottie entre l’Outeniqua et les chaînes de montagnes du Swartberg.
La demande internationale de plumes liée à la production de chapeaux, a atteint un niveau maximal en 1913 et c’est ainsi
que la petite ville d’Oudtshoorn est devenue prospère et a grandi internationalement.

La nascita del Gruppo KLEIN KAROO in Sud Africa coincide con l’avvio della Cooperativa agricola Klein Karoo nel 1945,
per mano di produttori locali. L’allevamento di struzzi, comunque, era già attivo fin dal 1864 nella Valle di Klein Karoo, una
regione situata tra lo scenico Outeniqua e la catena montuosa Swartberg.
Le soffici e coloratissime piume di struzzo diventarono presto la quarta voce dell’export regionale dopo oro, diamanti e lana e nel
1913 la domanda internazionale raggiunse un picco notevole e contribuì alla fioritura di Oudthshoorn.

Il cuoio prezioso è quello nobile e raro e si distingue dagli altri
per la sua texture caratteristica, che lo eleva al di sopra del
cuoio comune. Sono richiesti frequentemente per la maggior

Man mano che la tecnologia rende schiavo il mondo, il vero

Patinaed
Probably the most masculine and
rugged collection of the eight iconic
collections by the illustrious house of
South African ostrich leather, Patinaed
takes us back to the early explorers and
an authentic, natural world. With this
vintage collection dedicated to aged
leather, KLEIN KAROO proposes a
journey through time.
Antique Saddle evokes, not without
nostalgia, the dusty rides of the early
Dutch explorers in the bush, or the
sepia memory of Jan van Riebeeck
in 1652 discovering this mythical
place which became the famous Table
Mountain watching over Cape Town.
The Patinaed collection goes beyond
a mere patina of time, suggesting in-
stead the continuity between past and
present. In the same way that the Af-
rikaans language endures in South
Africa, these colours remain unchang-
ing, embedded within the collective
South African unconscious: the dark
turquoise petroleum tone of Cowboy
Blue, warmed by the more feminine
ardour of Flame Red; the rustic char-
acter of brown tobacco embodied in
the Mink shade.
A ruggedly natural universe unfolds
before our eyes.

africaine, Patinaed nous renvoie aux
premiers explorateurs, à un monde
authentique et essentiel. C’est un voy-
age dans le temps que propose KLEIN
KAROO pour cette collection vintage
dédiée aux cuirs vieillis.
Ainsi Antique Saddle évoque, non
sans une certaine nostalgie, les che-
vauchées poussiéreuses des premiers
explorateurs néerlandais dans la sa-
vane, ou le souvenir sépia d’un Jan van
Riebeeck découvrant en 1652 ce lieu
mythique qui deviendra l’illustre Mon-
tagne de la Table surplombant la ville
du Cap.
La collection Patinaed va au-delà
d’une simple patine du temps, s’in-
scrivant davantage dans la continu-
ité entre le passé et le présent. De la
même façon que la langue afrikaans
perdure en Afrique du Sud, ces teintes
demeurent immuables et s’inscrivent
dans l’inconscient collectif sud afric-
ain: le ton pétrole de Cowboy Blue,
réchauffé par l’ardeur plus féminine
de Flame Red; la rusticité d’un tabac
brun qui s’incarne dans la teinte Mink.

pelli di struzzo Sud Africana, Patina ci

dedicata alle pelli invecchiate.
E Antique Saddle evoca, non senza
una certa nostalgia, le corse polverose
dei primi esploratori olandesi nella
savana o i ricordi seppiati di Jan van
Riebeeck, che nel 1652, alla scoper-
ta di questo luogo mitico che divenne
la famosa Tavola della Montagna che
domina Cape Town.
Questa collezione Patina va oltre una
semplice patina del tempo: è la con-
