Product Design Trends in 2024 | Teenage EngineeringsPixeldarts
The realm of product design is a constantly changing environment where technology and style intersect. Every year introduces fresh challenges and exciting trends that mold the future of this captivating art form. In this piece, we delve into the significant trends set to influence the look and functionality of product design in the year 2024.
How Race, Age and Gender Shape Attitudes Towards Mental HealthThinkNow
Mental health has been in the news quite a bit lately. Dozens of U.S. states are currently suing Meta for contributing to the youth mental health crisis by inserting addictive features into their products, while the U.S. Surgeon General is touring the nation to bring awareness to the growing epidemic of loneliness and isolation. The country has endured periods of low national morale, such as in the 1970s when high inflation and the energy crisis worsened public sentiment following the Vietnam War. The current mood, however, feels different. Gallup recently reported that national mental health is at an all-time low, with few bright spots to lift spirits.
To better understand how Americans are feeling and their attitudes towards mental health in general, ThinkNow conducted a nationally representative quantitative survey of 1,500 respondents and found some interesting differences among ethnic, age and gender groups.
Technology
For example, 52% agree that technology and social media have a negative impact on mental health, but when broken out by race, 61% of Whites felt technology had a negative effect, and only 48% of Hispanics thought it did.
While technology has helped us keep in touch with friends and family in faraway places, it appears to have degraded our ability to connect in person. Staying connected online is a double-edged sword since the same news feed that brings us pictures of the grandkids and fluffy kittens also feeds us news about the wars in Israel and Ukraine, the dysfunction in Washington, the latest mass shooting and the climate crisis.
Hispanics may have a built-in defense against the isolation technology breeds, owing to their large, multigenerational households, strong social support systems, and tendency to use social media to stay connected with relatives abroad.
Age and Gender
When asked how individuals rate their mental health, men rate it higher than women by 11 percentage points, and Baby Boomers rank it highest at 83%, saying it’s good or excellent vs. 57% of Gen Z saying the same.
Gen Z spends the most amount of time on social media, so the notion that social media negatively affects mental health appears to be correlated. Unfortunately, Gen Z is also the generation that’s least comfortable discussing mental health concerns with healthcare professionals. Only 40% of them state they’re comfortable discussing their issues with a professional compared to 60% of Millennials and 65% of Boomers.
Race Affects Attitudes
As seen in previous research conducted by ThinkNow, Asian Americans lag other groups when it comes to awareness of mental health issues. Twenty-four percent of Asian Americans believe that having a mental health issue is a sign of weakness compared to the 16% average for all groups. Asians are also considerably less likely to be aware of mental health services in their communities (42% vs. 55%) and most likely to seek out information on social media (51% vs. 35%).

SUMATERA UTARAGEOPARK
D
ahulu tempat itu bernama
Stasiun 23. Letaknya
di Hutan Sibaganding,
dekat Kelurahan Parapat,
Kecamatan Girsang
Sipangan Bolon, Simalungun. Pada awal
hingga pertengahan 1980-an taman yang
menjadi bagian kawasan wisata Danau
Toba itu terkenal dengan keberadaan
kera-keranya. Tapi, yang banyak
dibicarakan masyarakat Parapat masa itu
adalah sosok berambut gondrong yang
gemar memanggil kera-kera dan siamang
denganterompetyangterbuatdaritanduk
kerbau. Ia dikenal sebagai ‘’Tarzan’’.
TarzantaklainadalahUmarManik.
Pada masa itu, atraksinya meniup te
rompet untuk memanggil aneka primata
dari dalam hutan Sibaganding sangat
kesohor di antero Toba. Turis lokal dan
bule antre menyaksikan tingkahnya yang
menghibur.
Sejak 1984, pria yang kini berusia
64 tahun itu tinggal di taman tersebut.
Namunpopularitasnyasebagaipemanggil
kera tidak cukup membantu, ketika pada
1996 pemerintah Kabupaten Simalungun
mengambil alih dan mengelola objek
wisata tersebut. Karena dianggap ilegal
menduduki tanah negara, Umar diminta
keluar dari kawasan tersebut. Bersama
keluarganya, ia pun pindah ke Siantar.
Setelah Umar pindah, taman kera
kehilangan ikonnya. Pengunjungnya
berkurang. Jumlah wisatawan kian me
nyusut lagi seusai peristiwa ledakan
Bom Bali, Oktober 2002. Turis lokal saja
sudah jarang datang, apalagi wisatawan
mancanegara. Kondisi taman pun bak
pepatah, ‘’hidup segan mati pun jauh’’.
Kehidupan Umar pada periode
itu tidak kalah ‘’segan’’. Itu tidak semata
karena kehilangan penghasilan (yang
kurang sedikit dari cukup) dari aktivitas
memanggil kera. Lebih dari itu, Umar
merasa sudah terikat secara spiritual
dengan Hutan Sibaganding. Hubungan
nya dengan ‘’opung’’ leluhur penunggu
hutan memberinya kemampuan per
dukunan. Umar mengaku, berdasarkan
petunjuk‘’opung’’ituiaberhasilmenyem
buhkan beberapa tamunya dari penyakit
non-klinis .
Opung pulalah, yang menurut
Umar, menitahkan ia dan keluarganya
untuk kembali ke hutan Sibaganding dan
mengurusi satwa dan pohon-pohonnya.
Sebab itu, pada 2008, Umar kembali ke
Sibaganding.
Kini, taman itu bernama Taman
Wisata Kera Toba Dream. Sejak dua
tahun lalu, taman dikelola Yayasan Toba
Dream pimpinan Monang Sianipar.
Yayasan ini bergiat dalam isu pelestarian
lingkungan dan budaya Batak.
Meski tidak seramai ‘’Stasiun 23’’
dulu, geliat pengunjung mulai tampak.
Terutama di hari libur dan libur panjang,
puluhan pengunjung -termasuk wisman--
datang ke Taman Wisata Kera untuk me
lihat aksi Umar.
Sebelum langit mendung, Umar
menyiapkan terompetnya. ‘’Tottrow
trowuet !’’ bunyi terompet tanduk itu
nyaring terdengar. Lalu ia berteriak me
rapalkan mantra panggilan ‘’Marikkati
tuson Hatop mijur tuson Asa mangan hita
( Ayo, berduyun-duyun kemari, cepat
turunlah ke sini, kita mau makan).’’
Puluhan monyet datang berduyun-
duyun. Umar mengeja nama beberapa di
antara mereka: Patra, Bruno, Bohel, dan
Rambo. Seekor siamang menyusul ber
gelantungan dari pohon. ‘’Nelly sini kau
cepat datang ada pisang ini,’’Umar me
manggilnya.

6 APRIL 2016 GATRA
Taman ini terletak di Desa Lumban Rang
Sionggang Utara, Kecamatan Lumban
Julu, Kabupaten Toba Samosir.
Situs ekowisata seluas 40 hektare
ini dibangun pada 1999 dan dikelola
Marandus Sirait, 49 tahun. Isinya ber
macam-macam. Antara lain, lahan
kebun produktif untuk tanaman seperti
stroberi, jeruk, dan markisa. Di dalam
taman ini terdapat Taman Konservasi
Anggrek Toba yang dibangun pada
Februari 2009, dan tidak ketinggalan
ada pula pohon-pohon khas Toba yang
langka.
Menurut Marandus, tiap menanam
pohon khas Toba, selalu disertai umpasa
atau perumpamaan berisi pesan positif.
Semisal umpasa saat menanam pohon
Bintatar. ‘’Bintatar perdindingan, simartolu
parkopkopna,’’ ucapnya. Artinya adalah
kayu dari pohon Bintatar itu untuk kayu
dinding rumah, kayunya cocok sebagai
pengikatnya atau penjempitnya.
Lain hal dengan pohon Jior. Pohon
inikayunyadimanfaatkanuntukmembuat
serunai, alat musik petik khas Toba,
semacam kecapi. ‘’Memet bulung ni jior, oh
memetan bulu ni bane-bane. Leket si batigor
ulekettan si maendame,’’ ucap Marandus.
Artinya, kecil daunnya pohon jior, lebih
kecil daunnya pohon bane-bane. Bagus
menegakkan kebenaran, tapi lebih bagus
pembawa damai.
Ada pula pohon sampinur tali dan
sampinur bunga, pohon bernilai tinggi.
Corak kayunya ibarat pohon jati, bagus
untuk bahan membuat perabotan rumah.
Itu pohon terbaik pertama dan kedua di
Toba ‘’Biasanya, orang Batak yang kaya
yang memilikinya. Karena mengambil
kayunya harus ke hutan Bukit Barisan di
antara perbatasan Tobasa dan Simalung
un,’’ ujarnya.
Banyak lagi umpasa untuk pohon-
pohon khas Toba yang ditanam di Taman
Eden 100. Marandus berharap, langkah
pelestarian pohon-pohon itu berguna,
tidak saja untuk menopang kelestarian
lingkungan, namun juga untuk penge
tahuan dari generasi ke generasi. Juga
bermanfaat bagi satwa-satwa penghuni
hutan-hutan di Toba.
Seperti kera-kera ‘’milik’’ Umar di
Hutan Sibaganding. Mereka menyukai
buah dari pohon andaliman. Buah itu
biasanyadigunakansebagaibahanrempah

masyarakat setempat.
