In moving its streaming product to the cloud, Netflix has been able to realize tremendous benefits in scalability, performance, and availability. The biggest benefit came from moving to a service-based architecture, which allowed engineering teams to accelerate their development cycle and innovate more quickly. However, cloud migration was a substantial effort. We mobilized resources across the company over several years, reorganized our engineering and operations teams, developed new security policies, migrated to the DevOps operations model, and even embraced a new product architecture. In this talk, we trace the evolution of the Netflix cloud model, both the successes and the challenges, and present them in a way that’s maximally useful to enterprises considering making the move to the cloud.

Getting data between systems, particularly at scale, is a common challenge faced by data engineers. Pipelines need to be reliable, flexible, and scalable, and without requiring us to write the same boilerplate code each time. Kafka Connect is a framework that provides scalable & fault-tolerant integration between Apache Kafka and other systems. It can be deployed on containers making it easy to scale for increased capacity, throughput, and resilience. We will give a short intro to Kafka Connect and container technologies before proceeding to a deep dive into practical applications. Attendees will learn about: * Real-world Kafka Connect pipelines. * How to build custom connector container images * Configuration, and orchestration of Kafka Connect pipelines with Kubernetes using GitOps.

How Docker is used at Gilt: At Gilt we use Docker primarily as a unit of immutability and to allow a standard way of deploying all kinds of software as opposed to its container properties. Why Gilt built Ionroller: An overview of the problems we tried to solve with Ionroller and immutable deploys. Pitfalls we've encountered with immutable deployments since Ionroller saw adoption in Gilt. Will cover issues such as DNS traffic migration, utilisation of resources ELBs not warmed up properly, Elasticbeanstalk using Nginx as proxy etc. Our experiences with Cloudformation and Codedeploy as an alternative to Ionroller and Elasticbeanstalk. Jobs: How we used to do batch jobs. Solutions we considered such as Mesos and Chronos. An overview of Sundial, an in house solution we built in the last few months and hope to open source for running containerized Docker jobs on Amazon ECS and why we chose it as our preferred solution.

Après 2 ans à mettre en place des plateformes managées de ce type, nous partagons nos expériences de ce qu’il faut faire pour mettre en œuvre du serverless en entreprise, en évitant les douleurs et en limitant les contraintes au maximum. Tout d’abord l’architecture technique, avec 2 implémentations très différentes : Kubernetes et Helm d’un côté, Clever Cloud on-premise de l’autre. Ensuite, la mise en place et l’utilisation d’OpenFaaS. Comment tester et versionner du Function as a Service. Mais aussi les problématiques de blue/green deployment, de rolling update, d’A/B testing. Comment diagnostiquer rapidement les dépendances et les communications entre services. Containerized Hadoop beyond Kubernetes

Supporting Hadoop in containers takes much more than the very primitive support Docker provides using the Storage Plugin. A production scale Hadoop deployment inside containers needs to honor anti/affinity, fault-domain and data-locality policies. Kubernetes alone, with primitives such as StatefulSets and PersitentVolumeClaims, is not sufficient to support a complex data-heavy application such as Hadoop. One needs to think about this problem more holistically across containers, networking and storage stacks. Also, constructs around deployment, scaling, upgrade etc in traditional orchestration platforms is designed for applications that have adopted a microservices philosophy, which doesn't fit most Big Data applications across the ingest, store, process, serve and visualization stages of the pipeline.
