Osama bin Laden, the founder and head of al-Qaeda, was killed on May 2, 2011 during a raid on his compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan carried out by U.S. Navy SEALs. The operation involved two Black Hawk helicopters that delivered SEALs to the compound where they encountered and killed bin Laden along with three other men and a woman. Bin Laden's body was buried at sea within 24 hours of his death.
