together they combat impunity of
killing journalists. What works and what
does not and how other countries in
South East Asia countries can learn from

Philippines Media Landscape
• Much media ownership is concentrated in the
hands of prominent families and businesses.
Consequently, some reports tend to be one-
sided presentations favoring special interests.
The privately owned press also tends toward
sensationalism at times. ( ref- Philippines

Killing Journalists in Philippines
• Since 1986, around 140 journalists have been
killed in Philippines. (Ref-CPJ)
• In 2009 Nov 23, 32 Journalists murdered in
Maguindanoa
• It was a single worst killing of journalists in
the world
• 2013 impunity index on May 2 CPJ ranked
Killing Journalists third worst in the world.

freedom of press and the government has
been criticized for failed to investigate
thoroughly killings of journalists and
subjecting journalists to harassment and
surveillance.
• Violence in the Philippines as election
approaches
• Elections in People are a spectacle of pomp,
pageantry and bloody violence
• This year is five years anniversary of 2009
massacre in Maguindanao
Waiting for Justice
During Aquino III's term, 26 journalists have been killed since
2012. Until this year, 51 cases are still waiting for justice. (Ref-
CPJ)
