Spelling Patterns
Objective

I can use spelling patterns
to help me read.
Essential Questions

1. What are spelling patterns? How
do they help us read fluently?
2. What is the relationship between
words that are spelled the same but
sound differently?
Think about....

There are patterns all around us.
What is a pattern? What pattern can
you find?
Write it on your white board.
Direct instruction
A pattern is a repeating unit

Spelling patterns are repeating sounds in words.
Example: mouse, house, out, cloud are all words
that repeat the sound “ou”

Spelling patterns are not always spelled the same
but the sound is the same.

Example: The “ow” sound in the word flower is
the same sound as the “ou” sound in house but is
spelled differently.

Editor's Notes

  • #7 Explain fluency and accuracy. Ask students to share ideas about why fluency and accuracy are important for reading.
  • #20 Another option for closure would be to have students write on white boards their answers then share with a partner or do stand and share.
  • #21 The objective of the game is to pick the word that matches the picture.
