Kebo-keboan is a ceremony held in Banyuwangi, Indonesia to invoke rain during dry seasons and ward off disasters. As part of the ceremony, selected individuals dress as buffalo and take on the role of "kebo" which symbolizes the buffalo as a powerful, agricultural beast. The kebo-keboan ceremony is believed to have started when the village suffered from disease and failing crops, until a elder had a vision that performing the ceremony and honoring Dewi Sri would result in healing and prosperity. The ritual is still held today in villages like Alasmalang and Aliyan to prevent calamity and celebrate abundance.
