You may be thinking your kids are downloading apps because they are just a simple
way for them to keep in contact with their friends. This is certainly true for most kids,
but unfortunately, even innocent use of most of these apps can land a kid in a
situation he/she never intended to be in.
Kik Messenger
Kik Messenger: is an instant messaging app that allows users to exchange
videos and pictures.
Problem: Sexting and sending nude photos on Kik is common. There is no
control who can communicate with you on kik.
Other apps like Kik are: Viber/ WhatsApp/ Textnow.
Whisper
Whisper allows users to anonymously share their ideas and actions that they
would not share with people they know.
Problem: Information is shared with users who are close to the GPS location
of the person making confessions. Online predators also use this app to
locate establish relationships with potential victims.
9Gag
9Gag is an app which allows kids to share funny pictures, or “memes” as they
like to call them. Users can share all kinds of images, and then comment on
them so that they can have a discussion.
Problem: The risky part for teens lies within the fact that all kinds of pictures are
shared on 9Gag and there are no age restrictions.
Holly demonstrates 9Gag
Ask.fm
Ask.fm is is a Question and Answer site that allows users to ask other users
questions while keeping their identity hidden.
Problem: Ask.fm is full of sexual content. Also, this app is full of cyberbullying
content.
Omegle
Omegle is primarily used for video chatting. When you use Omegle, you do not
identify yourself through the service. Instead, chat participants are only
identified as “You” and “Stranger.”
Problem: Sexual predators use this app to find kids to collect personal
information from in order to track them down more easily in person.
Yik Yak
Yik Yak is an app that works like an online bulletin board. It allows users to
post messages of up to 200 characters. The messages can be viewed by those
who are closest to the person who wrote the Yak, as determined by GPS
tracking.
Problem: Users are exposed to drug and sexual content. It also used for
cyberbullying.
Snapchat
Snapchat offers users the ability to send and receive messages, photos, or
videos that disappear after a few seconds.
Problem: It is the #1 app used for sexting. Messages ever disappear from
Snapchat. Many of the files uploaded to Snapchat end up on revenge porn sites,
called “snap porn.”
Other apps like Snapchat are: Wire/ Wickr/ Poke.
Holly demonstrates SnapChat
Vine
Vine is an app that works like YouTube. It allows users to create 6-second
video clips with their smartphones and tablets which can be shared with
other Vine users.
Problem: It doesn’t take much searching for kids to find videos with sex,
nudity, offensive language, violence, and drug use. Also, many school fight
videos are uploaded to Vine.
Tinder
Tinder is an adult dating app that is used for hooking-up and dating and is
one of the most popular apps for online dating. It allows users to find people
in their area with similar interests.
Problem: Tinder uses GPS location technology services which makes it easy
for online predators to target children. Also there are no controls in place to
prevent children from signing up for a Tinder account.
Other apps like Tinder are: Down/ Skout/ MeetMe/ Blendr/Badoo
Periscope
Periscope is the latest live-streaming video app from Twitter that allows
users to create and send live video from their smartphone or tablet.
Problem: Pornographers and online predators love live video streaming
apps, especially ones that have GPS location services. It gives them the
opportunity to develop a relationship with your child, while keeping tabs on
them.
Holly demonstrates Periscope
HideApp
HideApp is an app available only to Android smartphones and tablets. Allows
users to hide apps from prying eyes. Great to use if you want hide banking or
finance apps. Not great when kids use it to hide apps they should not be
using.
Nested Folders
Nested Folders and hiding apps are popular glitches on iPhones and iPad
that allows anyone to hide programs from prying eyes. Once the apps are
hidden on the iDevice, the only way to locate them is to use the Spotlight
feature.
The most important thing you can do as a parent to protect your children from
dangers that are associated with the use of these apps is to talk with them
frequently about their social lives.
