The castle was built in 1348 by Charles IV, Holy Roman Emperor and King of Bohemia. It is located 30 km southwest of Prague above the village of the same name. In 1422, during a siege by Hussite attackers, Prince Sigismund Korybut unsuccessfully tried to conquer the castle using biological warfare launched from a catapult.
