Kabuki theater is a classical Japanese dance-drama known for its elaborate costumes and stylized performances. It originated in the 17th century in Kyoto performed by female entertainers and grew popular among common people in Japan. However, eventually only male performers were allowed and they took over both male and female roles. During its golden age in the 18th century, kabuki theater formalized its structure, style and character types and closely associated with puppet theater, influencing each other.
