Part 1 Definition of Ontology vs Ontology Definition
WHAT IS AN ONTOLOGY? There is a lot of discussion about what an ontology is, and what it is not, and especially, a lot of pontification about what it should be. Answers are very different and vague. You get equivalent answers to the question 'what is reality?'
DEFINING DEFINITION The definition of the word 'ontology' Definition 1. this refers to definining the word 'ontology' and describe its meaning and context. It refers to A dictionary entry that can be the result of a word search. www.myrkr.in-berlin.de/dictionary/using.html essential semantic features of a concept as well as those that distinguish the concept from all others. www.termium.gc.ca/didacticiel_tutorial/english/lesson1/page1_3_5_e.html A definition binds a name to a logical expression. www.isi.edu/isd/LOOM/PowerLoom/documentation/manual/manual_12.html
DEFINING THE WORD 'ONTOLOGY' The majority of those who attempted an exhaustive definition of ontology, have only partially succeeded and sone got lost (or they are still trying) Only by first establishing the context that they are applying their definition to, they come up with a partial answer Welcome to the world of ontology
EXISTING DEFINITIONS: what already exists, or at least what is visible It is necessary (albeit daunting) to start from 'what already exists'. Look up how many definitions for 'ontology' you find. Make a list, group them based on similarity and/or scope. Decide which definition best applies to your reality.
'Ontology definition' This is something else entirely. Its a 'specification' that defines the logical and physical artifacts (concepts, terms, formalisms, knowledge representation, logic etc) that constitute any given ontology See Ontology Definition Metamodel
ONTOLOGY DEFINION So you now you know what an ontology is for you, and you have to create one, this is referred to as ' defining your ontology' But it ain't that simple either
Take your time See you in Part 2
