2. June 2015 employment summary
• The local labor force expanded by 20,000 workers as a result of graduates entering the job market. Employment increased by 15,000 jobs
so the expanding labor force only increased the overall unemployment rate by 10 basis points to 6.0 percent.
• The employment market’s ability to buffer itself from the increasing labor pool is a positive sign that the local economy is strong enough to
absorb unemployed workers and that we’ll continue to see more hiring in the future.
• The sectors driving this recent expansion are construction; trade, transportation, and utilities; professional and business services; and
leisure & hospitality.
• Compared to previous summer tourism seasons, Leisure & hospitality is ramping up at a higher pace, showing a monthly growth of 3.8
percent. Based on historic trends, this sector will continue a hiring surge through late summer.
• As is typically the case, Chicago’s office-using sectors dominated the hiring by taking 38.1 percent of the 12-month total employment
growth while the industrial sectors accounted for 19.4 percent of the annual growth.
• Total U.S. nonfarm employment increased by 223,000 jobs in June while downward revisions were made to previous months totaling
60,000 jobs. Given the strength of the recent employment reports, the Federal Reserve is projected to raise interest rates in September for
the first time since 2006.
• U.S. unemployment fell 20 basis points to 5.3 percent, its lowest level since April 2008. However, there are concerns about the labor force
participation rate, which measures how many Americans are employed or looking for work. It hit a 37-year low in June.
