Designer Topic 1: Managing Classroom Dynamics by
  Building a Connected Community of Learners:
               Jump Rope Routines
             By: Nicole Elsen
            Module 6- Showcase
Project Purpose
During this project I plan on encouraging my 5th grade
students to work cooperatively in groups while creating a
jump rope routine during our jump rope unit. Students
will display their routine in front of the class and the
teacher and students will grade the routine. We will also
videotape their routine so students are able to evaluate
their own routine.
Project Objectives
          The students will be able to:
1. Students will review videos of jump rope routines from past students.

2. Discuss the rubric for jump rope routines expectations.

3. Determine groups of 3-4 students based on student skills.

4. Review different jumps and their feelings about the jumps. Give students
time to practice.

5. Students will research the Internet and books for ideas on routines.

6. Videotape students practicing routines and let them review.

7. Videotape final presentation for grading.

8. Write in journals about their feelings and experiences.
Day 1: Practice


• Teacher will go over basic jump roping skills
  with students such as: forward jump, backward
  jump, cross jump, double jump and so on.
• Students will be giving time to practice jumps.
Day 2: Groups
• Teacher will go over jump rope routine rubric
  with students and explain how they will grade
  each other.
• Teacher will have a group of students (with
  prior experience jump roping) show an
  example of a jump rope routine.
• Teacher will also show a video of a routine
  from last year.
Day 3: Brainstorm
• Teacher will create groups after observing
  students skills.

• Students will be given time to brainstorm
  ideas and practice skills.

• Students will also be given time to
  research on the Internet for jump roping
  skills. Ex. http://42explore.com/rope.htm

• Students will also be able to use a variety
  of books from the library on jump roping.
Day 4: Journal

• Students will also be able to use a variety of
  books from the library on jump roping.
• Teacher will give every student a journal to
  write in about their feelings and experiences
  while working in their groups that will be
  handed in daily.
Day 5: Evaluation


• Students will then grade themselves at the
  end of the project on group dynamics, skill
  level, and overall participation.
• Students will be video taped so they will be
  able to evaluate themselves also.

  • 1. Designer Topic 1: Managing Classroom Dynamics by Building a Connected Community of Learners: Jump Rope Routines By: Nicole Elsen Module 6- Showcase
  • 2. Project Purpose During this project I plan on encouraging my 5th grade students to work cooperatively in groups while creating a jump rope routine during our jump rope unit. Students will display their routine in front of the class and the teacher and students will grade the routine. We will also videotape their routine so students are able to evaluate their own routine.
  • 3. Project Objectives The students will be able to: 1. Students will review videos of jump rope routines from past students. 2. Discuss the rubric for jump rope routines expectations. 3. Determine groups of 3-4 students based on student skills. 4. Review different jumps and their feelings about the jumps. Give students time to practice. 5. Students will research the Internet and books for ideas on routines. 6. Videotape students practicing routines and let them review. 7. Videotape final presentation for grading. 8. Write in journals about their feelings and experiences.
  • 4. Day 1: Practice • Teacher will go over basic jump roping skills with students such as: forward jump, backward jump, cross jump, double jump and so on. • Students will be giving time to practice jumps.
  • 5. Day 2: Groups • Teacher will go over jump rope routine rubric with students and explain how they will grade each other. • Teacher will have a group of students (with prior experience jump roping) show an example of a jump rope routine. • Teacher will also show a video of a routine from last year.
  • 6. Day 3: Brainstorm • Teacher will create groups after observing students skills. • Students will be given time to brainstorm ideas and practice skills. • Students will also be given time to research on the Internet for jump roping skills. Ex. http://42explore.com/rope.htm Loredo, E. (1996). The Jump Rope Book & the Jump Rope (Classic Games) • Students will also be able to use a variety of books from the library on jump roping.
  • 7. Day 4: Journal • Students will also be able to use a variety of books from the library on jump roping. • Teacher will give every student a journal to write in about their feelings and experiences while working in their groups that will be handed in daily.
  • 8. Day 5: Evaluation • Students will then grade themselves at the end of the project on group dynamics, skill level, and overall participation. • Students will be video taped so they will be able to evaluate themselves also.
  • 9. Assessment Rubric Below Basic Excellent Proficent Topic 1 Expectation 2 3 4 Total 1 Difficulty of Jumps. Showed creativity in routine. Kept a daily journal about group dynamics. Gained knowledge on jump rope skills. Was an cooperative member of the jump rope group Key: 3 Excellent: Does all work beyond expectations and completes on time 2 Proficient: Does all work to the best of ability and completes work on time 1 Basic: Does work that satisfies the assignment and gets some to all work done by the due date.
