Fred Murphy, an instructor at ABB's training center, received praise from a student for his handling of a difficult class participant and his dedication to ensuring all students understood the material. The student was impressed by Murphy's knowledge, storytelling ability, and willingness to stay late to help students. The student suggested Murphy for an individual quality award and the entire training center team for a team quality award due to the high quality and professionalism of the training provided.

During the last two weeks of June, 1998 I attended a training session on smart platform
hardware and maintenance.
One of the class participants was an ABB customer from XXXXXX. This individual had
a very caustic personality and expected the full attention of the class instructor, Fred
Murphy. This trait was particularly annoying during the lab exercises. Fred did a superb
job of defusing this situation I feel that many instructors would have lost their tempers
resulting in a disruption of the training for everyone involved.
Fred is a very knowledgeable person with literally a world of experience. He was able to
relate every aspect of the training to real life situations. His many anecdotes and sense of
humor made this the most in arresting training that I have received during my eighteen
years in the paper industry. In many instances Fred stayed way past the scheduled end of
the day in order to make sure that everyone understood the daily lab exercise.
Bruce, Fred Murphy’s dedication to and obvious pleasure in his job should be a source of
pride to ABB. I do not know if it is proper for a customer to nominate an individual for a
Quality Award, but I cannot think of a more deserving individual than Fred Murphy.
Since 1997, employees from the East Ryegate Mill have attended seven classes at the
Columbus training center. Everyone has been very impressed with the training that was
received. We all agree that the Columbus training center has no equal in terms of
professionalism and quality of training. You may want to consider a Team Quality Award
for Richard Hibbard and his team.
