Divorce rates have increased in Arizona's neighboring states of California, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, and New Mexico over the past two decades. California has the highest divorce rate at 7.1 divorces per 1,000 residents while Utah has the lowest at 2.9 divorces per 1,000 residents. The rising divorce rates in these Western states could be due to factors such as an increase in cohabitation rather than marriage and higher costs of living putting more strain on marriages.
