Ok (review ) celebrating 20 years of the balanced scorecardPhuong Dx
This document provides an overview of the author's literature review on research related to the balanced scorecard over the past 20 years. The author reviewed over 100 articles published in accounting and business journals from 1992 to 2011 on the topic. The review categorized the articles by topic, research setting, theories used, research methods, and data analysis techniques. The review found diversity in the topics, theories, and methods used in balanced scorecard research. However, it also identified a lack of theory-driven research as an area needing more attention. The author aims to identify gaps and opportunities for future balanced scorecard research, and contribute to the field by synthesizing the past 20 years of studies on the topic.

The powerpoint presentation to accompany my 2006 paper on the ranking of journals
The paper proposes a new framework for assessing research output based on the research goals of the selected university, internal research strengths of a department, and the ongoing support for development and enhancement of disciplinary thought within the marketing academy. Presented here is a system of ‘best fit’ between institutional research output and ideal publication mediums, rather than a universal rank of “best” journal

The product, functional unit and reference flowRas Clarkson
This document provides guidance on defining the scope of a life cycle assessment (LCA), including determining the relevant product functions, defining the functional unit, and establishing reference flows. It presents a five-step procedure for conducting these analyses: 1) describing the product properties, 2) identifying the relevant market segment, 3) determining comparable product alternatives, 4) defining the quantified functional unit, and 5) establishing the reference flows for each system. The goals are to define the object of study, provide a reference unit for comparisons, and enable equivalence between alternative product systems. The guidance aims to minimize subjectivity and reflect real market conditions in properly establishing the scope of an LCA.

This document summarizes Jan Reedijk's presentation on the value and accuracy of citation metrics in scientific evaluations. The presentation discusses how impact factors, h-indices, and other bibliometric indicators are often misused or inaccurately applied to evaluate scientists, research groups, and journals. It provides examples of errors in large citation databases, variations in h-index values depending on the data source, and strategies employed by journals to artificially inflate their impact factors. The document recommends that research assessment not rely solely on bibliometric indicators and calls for greater transparency and accuracy in bibliometric analysis.
Study of Published Articles on Management Accounting in Brazil and Spaindbpublications
Abstract: In recent decades, management accounting has undergone major changes with the inclusion of new topics
and research methods, dedicated journals, and especially multidisciplinary studies. These changes have been detected
in articles published in leading journals. In this context, the following research question arises: what is the profile of
management accounting research in Spain and Brazil? Thus, the objective of this study is to identify and analyze the
topics and research methods applied in management accounting studies in Spain and Brazil; to explain how these
studies are important to further developing the field of management accounting; and to compare them with studies
conducted by Hesford, Lee, Van Der Stede, and Young (2007) with respect to articles published in English-language
journals. We first selected seven Spanish accounting journals listed in the IN-RECS database (Índice de Impacto de
Revistas Españolas de Ciencias Sociales) [Impact Factor of Spanish Social Science Journals] and found 421 articles
published between 2001 and 2010. Second, we found 321 articles by selecting 29 Brazilian accounting, administration,
management, finance, and business journals evaluated by Brazilian Federal Agency for the Support and Evaluation of
Graduate Education (CAPES – Coordenação de Aperfeiçcoamento de Pessoal de Nivel Superior). The results show
that management accounting studies have not figured prominently in the articles that were reviewed. Planning and
control are among the most important subjects that emphasize performance measurement and evaluation. The existing
studies are largely focused on case studies and surveys in Brazil as well as case studies and reviews in Spain.
This document summarizes Marianna Robbins' experience on an international business seminar in Paris and London. It discusses presentations given on 3M France, the Paris Chamber of Commerce, Esso/ExxonMobil, Lockheed Martin UK, Wimbledon, and Lloyd's of London. For 3M France, the presentation covered the company's vision and industries. The Paris Chamber of Commerce presentation discussed cultural differences in European business. Lloyd's of London was analyzed in more depth, discussing the company's practices and recommendations for improvement. The document also provides overviews of the business environments in France and the UK.
The document discusses challenges faced by authors for whom English is a second language (ESL authors) when attempting to publish their research in peer-reviewed journals. It identifies key issues such as difficulties with the English language, selecting an appropriate target journal, understanding journal guidelines and instructions, and interpreting feedback from editors and referees. The document proposes solutions for publishers to help overcome these challenges and better serve ESL authors, such as providing translated and simplified instructions, improved journal selection tools, clearer communication of editorial decisions, and enhancing the peer review process.
Global University Rankings: Changing Methodologiesrjholmes99
The document discusses changes to methodologies used by major global university rankings over time. It summarizes changes made by QS (Quacquarelli Symonds) in 2005, 2007, 2011, and 2015 related to data sources, calculation of indicator scores, and measures to reduce volatility. These included adding employer surveys, changing FTE counts and z-scores, and excluding papers with many authors from citation counts. The document also summarizes changes made by Shanghai ARWU in 2004, 2013, and 2014-15 related to research indicators and highly cited researchers. It notes that rankings changes have generally helped universities with social science strengths. The author poses questions about current QS and THE methodologies and whether further changes are planned.
The document provides an overview of the global environment and Singapore's Budget 2016. It summarizes key points from Budget 2016, including that it allocates 66% of spending to the long-term goal of transforming the economy compared to 34% for short-term concerns. JOURNAL QUALITY LIST
Sixty-eight Edition, 4 July 2021
Professor Anne-Wil Harzing, http://www.harzing.com
Introduction
The Journal Quality List is published primarily to assist academics to target papers at journals of an
appropriate standard. We would be concerned if the list were used for staff evaluation purposes in
a mechanistic way. Whilst every effort has been made to ensure the accuracy of the Journal
Quality List, we recommend that it be checked before used extensively for evaluation purposes.
The editor will not be held responsible for omissions or errors.

DISCUSSION OF THE RANKINGS
Removal notes
68th
edition – removed older rankings (EJIS 2007, WIE 2008, UQ 2011) not updated by their
providers and/or likely to have been replaced by the ABDC and ABS rankings.
66th
edition – The 2019 ABDC ranking removed quite a few journals that ceased operation, no
longer met the quality threshold, or were no longer deemed sufficiently business focused. Most of
these journals had never been in included in the JQL in the first place as they didn't meet the
threshold criteria. However, about a dozen journals were listed in the JQL. Removal of their ABDC
ranking meant that some journals in the JQL were now ranked on only a few rankings. In many
cases their remaining ranks were also very low. This wasn’t deemed consistent with the JQL policy
that new journals are only added if they are ranked in the top (two) ranks on at least one of the
constituent rankings.
The editor therefore decided to remove some 15 journals that were:
• not ranked in the top (two) ranks of at least one of the constituent rankings and
• not ranked at all on either of the two most-used rankings [ABDC and ABS].
This means that if journals currently on the JQL are ranked on either the ABDC or the ABS list they
remain listed on the JQL even if they have a lower rank than would be needed to enter the JQL.
Given the number of academics relying on the JQL for continuity this was deemed an appropriate
level of conservatism in terms of removing journals.
61st
edition – removed two French single university rankings (HEC 2011) and ESSEC (2016) as
French universities now seem to use one of the three country-wide rankings.
60th
edition – removed older rankings (UQ 2007, Aston 2008, Cranfield 2012) not updated by their
providers and/or likely to have been replaced by the ABDC and ABS rankings.
53rd
edition – removed older rankings created between 2001-2005 and not been updated since
then by their providers. Also removed a range of journals in non-core Economics & Business areas
that – after removing the older rankings – only appeared on a single ranking list.
JOURQUAL 2015 — Association of Professors of Business in German
speaking countries
A ranking developed on behalf of the Association of University Professors of Business in German
speaking countries (Verband der Hochschullehrer für Betriebswirtschaft - VHB). This version
(JOURQUAL 3) is the 4th
edition of this list. For details about the update and the procedures
followed, see: http://vhbonline.org/service/jourqual/
There is an English-language article on the second edition of the JOURQUAL which is published
as: Schrader, U.; Hennig-Thurau, T. (2009) VHB-JOURQUAL2: Method, Results, and Implications
of the German Academic Association for Business Research's Journal Ranking, BuR - Business
Research, Official Open Access Journal of VHBVerband der Hochschullehrer für Betriebswirtschaft
e.V, Volume 2, Issue 2, December 2009, pp. 180-204.
[Editor’s note 1] In order to keep the JQL to a manageable length, lower-ranked journals (ranking
B-D) of the VHB list were only added if they already featured in the JQL. The same principle was
applied to German-language journals. The list also included a range of Engineering and Computer
Science as well as Health journals that were not included in the JQL as they were seen as less
relevant to Management/Business/Economics.
[Editor’s note 2] In the current version of the list, a range of journals had fewer than 25 survey
responses and hence remained unranked. However, as this would lead to significant loss of
information, for these journals we retained their JOURQUAL 2.1 rank in the JQL.
[Editor’s note 3] The current list is more tightly focused on Business & Management and hence
includes fewer Economics and Sociology journals than the previous JOURQUALs.
[Editor’s note 4] At request of the editors (Henig-Thurau and Sattler) the abbreviation used in the
JQL was changed from VHB to JOURQUAL to distinguish it from any new rankings by the VHB.

FT 2016 – Financial Times Survey of Top Business Schools 2010/2016
Journals used by the Financial Times to compile lists of top Business Schools, marked with 1 in the
JQL. The list was originally constructed in 2003, revised in 2010 increasing the number of journals
included to 45, and again in 2016 increasing the number of journals to 50 [2016].
ABDC 2019 — Australian Business Deans Council Journal Rankings List
December 2019
The ABDC Journal List is a collaborative list developed by the Australian Business Deans Council
that seeks to list journals relevant to Australian business academics and group these journals into
four quality categories ranging in descending order from:
Rank Interpretation
A* Best or leading journal in its field - publishes outstanding, original, and rigorous
research that will shape the field. Acceptance rates are typically low, and the
editorial board is dominated by leading scholars in the field or subfield, including
from top institutions in the world. Where relevant to the field or subfield, the
journal has the highest impact factors or other indices of high reputation.
A Highly regarded journal in the field or subfield - publishes excellent research in
terms of originality, significance, and rigour, has competitive submission and
acceptance rates, excellent refereeing process and where relevant to the field or
subfield, has higher than average impact factors. Not all highly regarded journals
have high impact factors, especially those in niche areas.
B Well regarded journal in the field or subfield - publishes research of a good
standard in terms of originality, significance and rigour and papers are fully
refereed according to good standards and practices but acceptance rates are
higher than for Tiers A* and A. Depending on the field or sub-field, will have a
modest impact factor and will be ISI listed.
C A recognised journal - publishes research that is of a modest standard and/or is
yet to establish its reputation because of its newness. This tier is more inclusive
than the others but only includes refereed journals.
The 2010 ABDC Journal List has been developed after wide consultation across the sector and
stakeholders, including over a dozen professional associations. The 2013 revision followed a
similarly comprehensive process, which was supported by public submissions according to a
standard template, qualitative and quantitative data assessment, public exposure feedback and
international expert consultation. ABDC released an interim list in 2016 in which a limited number
of new journals were included, very low-quality journals were excluded, field classifications
changed, and factual errors were corrected. The 2019 revision followed a very rigorous and
completely transparent process. A nearly 100-page report with all changes can be downloaded
here: https://abdc.edu.au/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/abdc-2019-journal-quality-list-review-report-
6-dec-2019.pdf
[Editor’s note 1] The 2019 ABDC ranking included 144 upgrades, 17 downgrades, 157 new
journals and the removal of no less than 241 journals that either ceased operation, no longer met
the quality threshold for continued inclusion or were no longer deemed to be sufficiently Business
focused [e.g. Journal of Experimental Psychology, Higher Education, Psychological Methods]. For
reasons listed in the 2nd
note not all changes were processed in the JQL. However, the number of
changes in the 2019 JQL version of the ABDC ranking was much higher than any of the previous
rounds and about 40 new journals ranked A or A* were added.
5. 5
[Editor’s note 2] In order to keep the JQL to a manageable length, lower-ranked journals (ranking B
and C) of the ABDC list were only added if they already featured in the JQL. Also excluded were
journals in the area of law, education (unless related to Management), psychology (unless related
to OB), general social sciences (unless related to Management), statistics (unless related to
Economics or Management) and medicine.
FNEGE 2019 — Foundation National pour l’Enseignement de la Gestion des
Entreprises, June 2019
A ranking created by the French Management Association to complement the CNRS list, which is
oriented more towards Science and Economics. The FNEGE Scientific Board includes all the
Academic Associations of Management representing the community of researchers in the field. The
list of scientific journals below is unanimously supported by the 14 scientific associations of the
discipline with the shared desire to obtain a categorization that reflects as accurately as possible
the specificity of management as a science. This unanimous support from a whole scientific
community confers high legitimacy on it.
In creating the list, the Association combined peer review with reference to a wide range of French
and international journal rankings (all included in the JQL) as well as bibliometric indicators (ISI
Journal Impact Factor, Google Scholar h-index, SCImago SJR).
[Editor’s note] In order to keep the JQL to a manageable length, lower-ranked journals (2-4) were
only added if they already featured in the JQL. The same principle was applied to French-language
journals. Also excluded were journals in the area of health, politics, and medicine.]
Rank Interpretation
1* Most notable management journals with a prominent position (only 8 journals)
1 Most notable management journals, very selective and particularly recognized in
France and abroad
2 Highly selective journals with a very demanding peer review process
3 Very good journals with a good scientific reputation and significant contributions
4 Good journals with good selectivity and original contributions
CNRS 2020 — Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (www.cnrs.fr)
June 2020
The list of journals was constructed through consultation with experts in the field, both in France
and abroad. Directors of the various research groups (and through them the researchers in these
groups) were consulted in an iterative process. Rankings of foreign universities were also consul-
ted as well as listings such as SSCI and EconLit. Only academic peer-reviewed journals were in-
cluded in the list, which therefore excludes high-ranked professional journals such as Harvard
Business Review. Rankings are based on: academic reputation, audience, and impact. For more
information and the full list see: https://sites.google.com/site/section37cnrs/Home/revues37.
The list is updated twice a year (in spring and autumn) after a meeting of CNRS Section 37. The
Spring session is devoted to considering new requests submitted by the community (including
journals’ editors) to upgrade, downgrade or exclude journals already listed, or to include new ones.
The Autumn session re-evaluates a sixth of the list in each domain.
[Editor’s note 1] In order to keep the JQL to a manageable length, lower-ranked journals (ranking 2-
4) of the CNRS list were only added if they already featured in the JQL. Journals in Law,
Agricultural/Energy Economics and Health that were not already included in other lists were also
excluded, as were French journals.
[Editor’s note 2] Previous lists appeared to have a bias towards Economics and (to a lesser extent)
towards the more quantitative fields of Business (F& A, IS and OR). This bias has been largely
addressed in later lists. Many journals in Management & Marketing were upgraded, whilst several
journals in Finance & Accounting were downgraded. Even so Management & Marketing still appear
to be somewhat undervalued in comparison to other rankings in the JQL.

Den 2020 — Danish Ministry Journal list mid-2020
In collaboration with academics, the Danish Ministry publishes an annual list of journals it
recognizes as peer-reviewed and of a particular quality. It assessed those included in the list of
over 20,000 journals with a rank of 1, 2 or 3 [see below]. Of the almost 950 journals in the JQL
around 45% are scored 2 or 3, clearly indicating that the JQL tends to focus on high quality
journals. The highest (3) rank was introduced recently and doesn’t seem to be applied frequently in
Business & Economics. Currently, the moment only 5 journals [all in Economics] carry this rank.
Rank Interpretation
3 Most prestigious journals (0.1% of total)
2 Particularly distinguished journals (16% of total)
1 Ordinary journals (84% of total)
EJL 2020 — Erasmus Research Institute of Management Journals Listing
The strategic purpose of the ERIM Journals List is to contribute to the quality of the scientific output
of ERIM and to the academic reputation of the institute (see http://www.erim.eur.nl/ejl). The ERIM
Journals List (EJL) helps to define the core domain of ERIM and provides direction as to the type of
publications that ERIM would like to produce. The practical purpose is to guarantee to the ERIM
members and aspirant members that publications in the journals of the EJL will qualify for member-
ship. The EJL is believed to cover the whole field of research in management, as far as the ERIM
research programs are concerned. This does not imply that no credit will be given for publications
in journals that are not on the EJL. It is impossible to make an exhaustive list of all the journals in
the domain of research in management. The ERIM journal list is based on judgment by peers and
(ISI) impact scores. The first edition of the list came out in 2002 with regular updates since.
[Editor’s note] If a journal of the EJIM list was not already included in the JQL (which apart from half
a dozen Dutch journals was rare), it was only added if it had a score of STAR or P(A).
Rank Interpretation
P* Top journals among P
P Best journals in the field
P A Top international journals (aspirant). By 1/1/2016 these journals will be
transferred to the secondary list unless ISI with high impact has been attained
S Scientific refereed journals of a recognized academic reputation that do not
reach the quality levels of the Primary Set
M* Top managerial journal
HCERES 2020 — High Council for Evaluation of Research & Higher
Education, March 2020
The HCERES journal list has been constructed by the section 37 of the CNRS, in consultation with
academics from institutions such as CNRS, INRA and CNU. It has continuously evolved over time.
The 2020 update is a combination of the CNRS 2019 and FNEGE 2019 lists. Journals ranked 1*, 1
or 2 on these lists were classified as A, journals ranked 3 as B, and journals ranked 4 as C.
7. 7
This means that as long as a particular journal had a rank of only one above the lowest of five
ranks on either the CNRS or the FNEGE list it would be ranked as B, if it had a middle rank (of
five) on either list it would be ranked A. As such there is less differentiation in the highest rank than
in other journal rankings with 38% of the ranked journals in the highest (A) category and another
36% in the B category.
[Editor’s note] In order to keep the JQL to a manageable length, lower-ranked journals (ranked B, C
or unranked) of the HCERES 2020 list were only added if they already featured in the JQL.
Journals in Law, Agricultural/Energy Economics and Health that were not already included in other
lists in Business and Management were also excluded, as were French journals.
ABS 2021 — Association of Business Schools Academic Journal Quality
Guide June 2021
The first version of this list was published by Bristol Business School in June 2004, while the
second version appeared in 2005 as the Harvey Morris Business Journals List. The original list
stems from an analysis of where UK academics declared publications for the purposes of RAE
2001. Other journals were then added through comparison with other lists in circulation. Rankings
in these lists were standardized at this stage, bearing in mind the UK RAE 2008 classification of
research outputs as 4* (best work in the field), 3* (international excellence), 2* (internationally
recognised) 1* (nationally recognised).
In converting the second edition of the HM List to the ABS list the editors followed a nine-stage
procedure involving significant peer review and review of the quality standards, track records,
contents and processes of each journal. For the 2nd
(March 2008), 3rd
(March 2009), 4th
(March
2010), 5th
(February 2015), 6th
(March 2018), and 7th
edition (July 2021) review panels of experts
considered feedback from academic associations, publishers and individual academics. For further
details see the Introduction to the guide accessible here: https://charteredabs.org/academic-
journal-guide-2021-available-now/
[Editor’s note] In order to keep the JQL to a manageable length, lower-ranked journals (1-2) were
only added if they already featured in the JQL. Also excluded were journals in the area of law,
education (unless related to Management), psychology (unless related to OB), general social
sciences (unless related to Management) and medicine.
[Editor’s note] The 2021 edition introduced downgrades for a handful of journals, upgraded five
journals from a rating of 4 to Journal of Distinction status, upgraded about 50 journals by one rank
and added a dozen new journals at the rank of 3 or 4. The main change, however, was the addition
of some 150 journals ranked 1 and 2. As most of these journals were not included in the JQL (see
note above), those interested in these new additions will need to refer to the ABS website.
Rank Interpretation
4* A world elite journal
4 A top journal
3 A highly regarded journal
2 A well-regarded journal
1 A recognised journal
Scopus 2021 — Scopus CiteScore 2020, published May 2021
CiteScore™ is Elsevier’s free alternative to the Clarivate Web of Science Journal Impact Factor
(see: https://www.scopus.com/sources.uri)). The 2020 CiteScore counts the citations received in
2017-2020 to articles, reviews, conference papers, book chapters and data papers published in
2017-2020, and divides this by the number of publications published in 2017-2020. It differs from
the WoS Journal impact factor by having a 4-year publication window and being based on Scopus
data rather than Web of Science data.
Note: Just like the Journal Impact Factor the CiteScore is not field normalized. Hence it should not
be used to compare journals across fields.
