Periodontitis and diabetes have a two-way relationship. The study included men and women aged 20-60 with type 2 diabetes for over 3 months, an HbA1c under 8, stable diabetic drug use, no other health issues impacting diabetes or periodontitis, and moderate to severe periodontitis. Patients had to have at least 16 natural teeth and no periodontal treatment in the last 6 months. Exclusion criteria included insulin use, extensive dental work needed, oral infections, smoking, life-threatening diabetes issues, low or high BMI, pregnancy, and recent antibiotic/immunosuppressant use.
