On May 22nd, 2011, an EF-5 tornado struck Joplin, Missouri causing widespread damage. The tornado had winds up to 200 mph and a path length of over 22 miles. Initial damage estimates were over $3 billion, with twice the debris created compared to the 9/11 terrorist attacks. The tornado severely damaged St. John's Mercy Medical Center and Joplin High School. In the aftermath, the city began rebuilding efforts and the high school held its first football game since the tornado.
