John Smith was born in 1580 in England and was baptized in January 1596. In 1600 he went on adventures and later became the captain of 250 cavalrymen, fighting for Austrian forces against the Turks. He returned to England in 1605 and helped establish the Jamestown colony in Virginia in 1607, where he helped the colonists fight off local Indigenous groups and became an influential chief.
