John Locke was born in 1632 in England and grew up in a Puritan village. He received an early education at home before attending Westminster School and earning a scholarship to study at Christ Church, Oxford, where he received a B.A. in 1656 and an M.A. in 1659. At Oxford, he studied medicine, science, and philosophy. After his father died in 1661, Locke became a lecturer at Christ Church and wrote extensively on topics like toleration, human understanding, government, and education. He died in 1704 at the age of 72.
